NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

Thanks for spotting the Boise state error. I was getting a little bleary eyed when I updated the list and I missed it! Anyway, for the west coast…

University of Puget Sound: NMF get 1 to 2k a year based on need.
Seattle Pacific University: Three NMF/SF get 2k scholarship.
Western Washington University: NMF get 10k over four yrs.
Eastern Washington University: 3k per yr for NMF/SF
University of Montana: 2k per yr for NMF, 1k per yr for NMSF
University of Orgeon: 2k for four yrs for NMF

These are all relatively small scholarships, so they did not make the list, but I hope that helps.

University of Central Florida: NMF OOS 140k package, in state 64K +( for both OOS and IS) housing options+ computer.

Correction: U. Texas at Dallas: for NM Finalists who designate UTD as first choice, the scholarship is tuition and fees + $8,000/year + $2000 study abroad stipend. (It is 4K per SEMESTER, not 4K per year). This amount is meant to cover room and board. This is an automatic, non-competitive scholarship.

Also, IMO, U. Tulsa should be moved to top rank. If you receive their Presidential scholarship, you get a full ride. It is competitive, but they give 40-50 of them, so about 25-30% of applicants will get them. If you are NMF and are not chosen for the Presidential scholarship, they will give you full tuition ($30K).

Thanks atomom, I’m really sorry for all the mistakes!

U. Texas at Dallas: NMF scholarship is full tuition+ fees+ 8k yearly+ 2k study abroad+guaranteed.

U. Tulsa: Presidential scholarship = full ride, competitive (40-50 available). Or NMF full tuition (30k) if you are not chosen.

Addition
Ohio State University: NMF up to 8k over four years.

So, I may do another update to fix the mistakes(unless someone else wants to) once we hit the 40th page, and I would like to hear suggestions on how it should be organized.

Alphabetical or by state? (It is a mix right now.)
Categories: Full tuition public, Full tuition private, Notable Public, Notable Private?
What the cutoff for notable scholarships should be
Additional information: Such as rank if the school is prestigious?
If I should provide links to the scholarships (It makes the post long, but helps to rectify my errors)

First let me say thanks for taking the list on… it helps so many of us. Although I just started posting, I have been lurking and this list was a God send when we started research.

To me the better organization would be by state. In addition, I am not sure you need to make a distinction bewteen public/private. I certainly do not think that links are required… how hard is it to google intitution name and National Merit … this list should be a starting point for interested parties to reasearch further intitutions they may be unaware of rewarding NM, IMHO.

I definitely would like to see the list arranged by state. I like the links, but I don’t think there needs to be a public/private distinction.

Thank you!

I also noticed this on the KU page …

*Must file the FAFSA by the 3/1 priority date each year and be Pell-eligible.

So to some degree - you get the scholarship of you are NMF - but you have to be Pell eligible - not clear if you also have to qualify for FA using the FAFSA. I’m not sure what the difference would be between needing FA and Pell Eligible.

I would suggest you look closely at all requirements before listing a school as your number one choice.

I agree with MaterMia. If a school looks to be your first choice, please note that there are stipulations and deadlines not mentioned in the list below. Also, some listings may be purely incorrect, and some information is not current. So, no separation between private and public, no links, but by state…

Full ride=tuition+ room+ board.
U = University
C = College
OOS = Out of State
IS = In State
Scholarship is only for NMF unless NMSF is indicated.

small point…Texas A/M also provides OOS tuition waiver = ~ $60K additional.

Interesting, is the OOS tuition waiver guaranteed? I didn’t check the instate tuition rates, but would 34k be virtually full tuition for 8 semesters? I suppose TAMU should be put in the top category.

TAMU also encourages you to indicate that you are interested in scholarships on the app and they will help you navigate the departmental and other scholarships.

Correction: Info. for “University of Texas at Dallas” is listed under “University of Dallas”–these are two different schools. (The University of Dallas, located in Irving, TX is a small Catholic liberal arts school with about 1,500 undergrads. The University of Texas at Dallas, in Richardson, TX is a public university with about 12,000 undergrads.) Both lines are in error. They should read:

U. Dallas: Full tuition. 20 per year available. (Possibly competitive—others will receive significant merit awards–about 3/4 tuition) Designate UD as first choice by March 1.

U. Texas at Dallas = Full tuition and fees + $8000 annually (for room and board) +$2000 travel stipend. Non-competitive.

Post #588 is incorrect. On the KU scholarship page, the info. quoted above applies only to the “Pell Advantage Scholarship.” (See the asterisk at the bottom of the page. The information next to the asterisk doesn’t apply to any other scholarships, only that one marked with the asterisk.)

The NM scholarship at The University of Kansas is for any NMF/National Achievement Finalist/National Hispanic Scholar who is a Kansas resident. 10K per year-- renewable with a 3.4 GPA.

University of Oklahoma’s package is now $108,000.

Oklahoma State University appears to offer 112k package for OOS, and 55k for in-state.
https://financialaid.okstate.edu/national-merit</a>
University of Oklahoma appears to offer 57k plus goodies to in-state (other threads could give you a more certain answer) and 92k plus perks to OOS.

Google may think that the two schools are interchangeable (Although, I appeared to have thought the same thing about U of Dallas and UT-Dallas!)

Has anyone tried out the University of Rochester scholarship?

U of Minnesota Twin Cities gives NMF Gold Scholar Award $10-12K/year for 4 years. It used to be guaranteed. Link: http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/counselors/updates/update101207.pdf</a></p>

Now the award only gives NMF ‘preference.’ Links: [Information for National Merit Semifinalists](http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/nationalmerit/) [December 2, 2011 Update](http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/counselors/updates/update111202.html) Freshmen NMF have increased from 75 in 2006-2008, to about 100 in 2009-2010, to 166 in 2011 links: [University of Minnesota releases enrollment numbers for current school year : UMNews : University of Minnesota](<a href=“News & Events | University of Minnesota”>News & Events | University of Minnesota) [University of Minnesota sees continued improvement in freshman class : UMNews : University of Minnesota](<a href=“News & Events | University of Minnesota”>News & Events | University of Minnesota), maybe because of the award(?), and guessing it is too many for them to afford award for all. I will phone and find out more details, report back. They have another scholarship that gives NMF preference, Cyrus Northrop $5K/year, link: [University-Wide Scholarships](University-Wide Academic Scholarships | Office of Admissions) will ask about stacking and typical NMF packages.

U of Cincinnati
For this award add room cost to tuition. There are 60 of these. There are also 10 Presidential awards which include board as well, but these are not NMF exclusive like the Cincinnatus awards.
LInks: [Cincinnatus Scholarship Program, University of Cincinnati](<a href=“Student Financial Aid - About UC | University of Cincinnati”>Student Financial Aid - About UC | University of Cincinnati) , [Cincinnatus Excellence Scholarship, University of Cincinnati](http://admissions.uc.edu/scholarships/excellence.html)

U of Cincinnati- also change to IN-STATE tuition. Their $3K/year award to offset OOS surcharge only covers about 25% of difference.
