<p>Not sure what the actuality is, but the website and a letter from U Nebraska - Lincoln for students entering Fall 2010 says that NMFs who name U Neb-Lincoln as 1st choice “will be considered for” the Chancellor’s Scholarship (full undergrad tuition plus 2K toward room, board and fees). So it sounds as if in 2010 U Neb is full tuition+ competitive rather than guaranteed.</p>

I’m a semifinalist right now and this definitely has me thinking about changing my number one school for the finalist app. Do you think it is worth it to put your number one school as a reach that gives lots of aid, or should I stick with a match that gives much less aid? <p>You should put “undecided” as your first choice college at this point. Wait until next April when you know where you get accept and decide to go. Then you put down that school as your “first choice college”. The first choice will not be notified until sometime in March or April next year and really has no influence in your admittance.</p>

<p>I noticed a couple of people posting numerical scores for the PSAT. But actual scores are only important insofar as they compare with other scores and every state has a different cut off for what constitutes a NMSF. It’s just the top 1% or so of the state. Thus, if your state is more competitive, you’ll need a higher score. My son missed NMSF with a score of 226. He was only commended. We live in NJ. Apparently NJ has the second highest scores in the nation after Mass. At least, this is what his guidance counselor said! The whole thing is extremely unfair (in addition to class and economics–in the school I teach in, the students don’t even know the PSAT can lead to scholarships, and many don’t take it, or if they do, are not prepared). But then, life is unfair…Feeling cynical today.</p>
<p>DC, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New Jersey cut-offs are the same: 221. </p>
<p>If your son took the PSAT as a freshman or sophomore (as my son did), he is not going to qualify regardless of score (except in very narrow circumstances, and if he continued on in high school, those circumstances don’t come into play here).</p>

<p>I hope hoveringmom’s child wasn’t overlooked in some way - either by his school (not giving him his package) or by him not filling out the test form correctly. </p>
<p>My son almost didn’t make NMSF because when he erased something on his form, he accidentally also erased where a student is supposed to indicate that he’s a full-time student. Luckily, the counselor caught his mistake when scores came back in Dec of his junior year, and she corrected it with NM corporation.</p>
<p>I wonder if someone should PM hoveringmom to tell her that her son should have made the cutoff, unless she’s mistaken about his score. Another possibility is that he isn’t a junior, so his score didn’t count.</p>
<p>My son just got a letter from New College of Florida saying that since he is a NMSF he can have $17,500 a year for four years. That would bring OOS tuition down to about $10,000. From the wording of the letter it sounds like it’s a flat out offer, no competition for this award.</p>
<p>bird rock, there are indeed schools that offers all NMSF and NMF automatic scholarships. If your son makes NMF (90% of NMSF becomes NMF) New College of Florida might offer your son a bigger scholarship.</p>
