NMF Scholarships: An Updated Compilation

^^^^

Be aware…whenever a scholarship is for a “set amount” (such as $17,500 in this case), that that number does not go up regardless of any tuition increases. Therefore, if the shortfall is $10,000 (for 2009-2010 school year), the shortfall wil likely be higher every year as tuition increases.

From New College Website…

Excellence Awards
New College Excellence Awards are available to National Merit, National Achievement and National Hispanic Scholars.

This scholarship replaces the Four Winds Award.

Scholarship Value:

$17,500 per year, for a total of $70,000 over four years.

Requirements:

You must be a National Merit5 or National Achievement finalist and select New College as your first-choice school according to National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) procedures.
OR
You must be a National Hispanic Scholar, recognized through the College Board National Hispanic Recognition (NHR) Program.

Kansas State offers 7k a year NM/NA/NH SF & F from Kansas. that covers tuition+

^I see the scholarship offer on the website, but not a specific amount. Can you provide textual evidence to confirm the 7k?

mom2collegekids, do you remember which colleges they were?

Some of the schools that gave outright offers…

Fordham
U central florida
U of Alabama
U of Oklahoma
Birmingham Southern
U of Southern Miss

are a few off the top of my head…

As a matter of fact, U of Southern Miss actually sent the offer a day or so before my son was formally told by his principal that he was a NMSF (my son found out in August - his principal didn’t wait until the Sept date). I guess the universities see the lists of NMSF long before the public is told. So, when we got the letter from USM, it kind of let the cat out of the bag…LOL

If your child hasn’t received any such offers, feel free to email their scholarship offices and ask them about their NM scholarships. Many of the colleges that automatically give NM scholarships will send you an offer if you just contact them and ask them about their NM scholarships. And, frequently, they’ll include an application fee waiver.

Add some others, Tulsa, Arizona, ASU, Texas A&M, Southern Florida, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma Christian.

^ Are those to be added to the compilation or to the informal list of “outright offers”? If the former, please provide links with textual evidence.

K

Which schools do your want online proof for?

^ Any that are not already listed in the latest version of the compilation, and which you believe qualifies (at least full tuition, competitive or guaranteed).

The Kstate presidential scholarship was offered to me and it was 7k. Your right, their website doesnt tell you about the amount so i dont really know if its augmented by some other criteria but i would think they would at least provide that info. I tried e-mailing their finaid dept before it was offered to me but they never responded, so i cant be 100%

I know that Fordham U’s NMF scholarship is not automatic. I don’t have proof of that, but I have read several times on CC of kids who were NMF but did not get a full scholarship.

Fordham now requires that the student be in the top 10% of their class to get the NMF scholarship.

Miss St needs to corrected to note that it includes housing.

National Merit/Achievement Finalist, Non-Resident
Four-year award (eight semesters)
Priority Date: February 1
Award:
$20,000 over four years ($5,000/year), plus the non-resident portion of tuition
4 years of complimentary, double occupancy, on-campus housing
One-time $1,500 Educational Enrichment Scholarship for qualified educational pursuits, such as study abroad
Criteria:
Scholarship GPA of 3.25
Name MSU as their first choice

*Scholars sponsored by National Merit Corp. or a foundation may be selected for an annual stipend ranging from $500 to $3,000.

^“full tuition+” indicates that a school offers more than full tuition but less than a full ride.

^^^

Oh, I know…but I think including housing is a bit more than just “tuition+”

To me, Tuition+ looks like tuition plus 1 or 2 thousand dollars. Housing can mean about $7k each year to a student.

o Full ride is defined as minimum tuition/room/board.
o U=University, C=College
o *=annual class <1k students
o ^=schools I personally find notable

To the top.

This deserves to be a sticky at the top of the thread!

Great List Keilexandra!

Thanks for great list!

An update to info on University of Dallas: NMF full tuition & NMSF half tuition up to full tuition. I think it’s competitive, based on wording below…

From U.D. website: “National Merit Finalists will receive a full tuition scholarship when they put UD as their first choice college with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This scholarship is inclusive of all other scholarships and grants offered through UD and is based on the competitiveness of the applicant pool. This scholarship is renewable annually.”

A girl from sons’ high school went to U of Dallas. She did very well there. She spent a semester in Rome…awesome, fun.
