NMH, Tabor and others

Hello Everyone,

I just want to know how you see these schools positioned and ranked among BSs in general (prestige, selective criteria and etc.).

Berkshire, St. George’s, KENT, NMH, Tabor, Salisbury, Holderness

I also appreciate your telling me in terms of making the chance to getting into Ivy leagues, too.
Thanks.

It is not a good idea to base your high school decision on how likely you would get into the Ivies from a said school.

It is also a bad idea to base that decision soley on prestige.

All of them are fine schools and prepare their students well for whichever great colleges they attend.

If you are choosing a boarding school based on prestige, you are basing your choices on the wrong reasons. If you are choosing a boarding school based upon college matriculation data, you are choosing a boarding school for the wrong reason. If you are asking any such questions without actually having an acceptance to said boarding school, you are way ahead of yourself.

The days of a BS Head of School calling up Harvard and saying “Here is my list of kids I want you to admit” are long gone.

As I have said many many times on this forum, do not go to boarding school if your only purpose is to use it as a stepping stone to a top college; that reasoning is just folly. A boarding school may give a student the tools with which to develop him/herself into a viable candidate, but others schools may as well. Colleges admit students, not boarding schools. While the professionals at the schools are ready and willing to assist in the process, they will not, and should not, do the work for you. Good luck.

They’re all relatively selective schools with the least selective being Kent School with a 39% acceptance rate. With that being said, you do not want to attend any of those schools if your end goal is to attend an Ivy.

It would be best for you to attend a school in which you’d easily stand out from your peers. At those schools, you will find difficulties doing so. It’s sort-of hard to stand out when you’re a shining star surrounded by other shining stars.

Now, why do you want to go to any Ivy? What can an Ivy get you that other top 100 U.S colleges can’t?

Thank you for all the comment. I am asking about prestige and IVYs just for my secondary information, because I have reviewed these schools by having done with visit and information gathering carefully, but still don’t know the exact difference. I just want to hear something gauge for me from somebody talk objectively especially on NMH, Tabor and Holderness.

@Florentina: Here are some threads that will give you a place to start with each school:

As you are new to the site, if you type a school name into the box in the upper righthand corner that says, “Search Entire Site,” you should get a list of threads relating to those schools. Some of the threads will be old, but much of the discussion will be useful to one just starting to research. It is difficult to manage a thread asking about seven schools. You might start with researching some previous discussions like those linked above and then either add to those threads (if they are still open) or start a new one with questions about a single school. Welcome to the forum.

Florentina: Were you admitted to all of these schools?

The school that is most likely to help you get into a selective college like an Ivy League university is the one where you are most likely to be happy, thrive, and take fullest advantage of all opportunities.

That is why it is best to know yourself well, understand whether you do better with a lot of structure or a little, a more formal or informal vibe, and what kind of place and environment makes you happiest.

If you are happy and motivated, you will excel and make the most of school… and it those kids who make the most of school, whether that is high school or college, that report the highest levels of success and satisfaction with outcomes.

It is better to thrive, shine, and stand out at a less prestigious school, than to be miserable at a more prestigious one. It all comes down to YOU… NOT the school.

Go where you will be the most inspired, motivated, and happy!

There is NO one-size-fits-all answer to which is the best school.

Awesome answer @CaliMex !

Boarding school is all about what you do with the experience and opportunities given to you! Kids from all of these schools have gone to ivies, so that shouldn’t be your deciding criteria. Best of luck!

@Florintina: Visiting can be quite helpful. Some boarding schools place a stronger emphasis on sports than others, while some have extensive art & music offerings, etc.

Tabor Academy has an outstanding head of school & offers extensive marine sciences study. If oceanography & related fields are of interest to you, then Tabor should be a target school.

Thank you so much for your thoughtful advice. All are so helpful for me and I got confidence on those who responded. Now, I would like you to tell me which school you would choose between NMH and Tabor by yourself personally for your child? And please tell me why. I would like to see the process of decision. Thank you for your help.
