has anyone done a year at either NMMI or Marion for the civil prep program. If you have, or know anyone who has, please just tell me what you thought about it. Thanks.

I'm currently finishing up a year at NMMI.

and.

its been interesting. The first few weeks, and months, were the hardest. Its very, very hard to be motivated when you have to go to this military school that you never heard of before, for an entire year, when all you want to do is be at west point. Its tough, but I guess I'm better for it. I've met sooo many great people, who are going to all the academies, and I've become a little more disciplined. A little more mature, a little stronger, etc. I can't really say if it was worth it, as I'm not a plebe yet and can't gauge if a year of prep was valuable. But, I do have an appointment, and I will be getting out of some classes plebe year.

So. yeah. I think its been worth it.

I went through NMMI in 2001-02, and I'd have to say that it was the best decision I made prior to coming to West Point. I seriously think that I would not have made it through Plebe year without that experience. I met some of my closest friends in the world there, the academics more than prepared me for West Point, and it teaches you to put up with BS.

That being said, I hated that year more than anything on the face of the planet. No sum of money could make me go back there. Roswell is quite possibly the worst city in the nation. It was the most miserable experience of my life, to include Infantry basic training at Ft. Benning.

But that's just kind of how you have to roll with it. You suck it up big time for a short period in order to get more later. It will get you ready for West Point, better than anywhere else in the country I believe. NMMI is the best civil prep program there is, and the cheapest, so it's really a no brainer to do it. Whenever things sucked during plebe year, or even now as a firstie, I sit back and go, well, at least I'm not at NMMI....

This has been long winded, but if you're giving the opportunity to go to NMMI, take it. You most likely wont be happy while you're there, but you will be so much better off, not just as a plebe, but as a person, for having that experience.

can anybody comment on marrion or the other civil prep places? the extra bucks may be worth it if it doesnt suck the life from me.

PS- 1400 posts, i believe i forcasted hearing my admissions decision at post 1500... its gonna be close

um, i've talked with people from both Marion and Valley Forge and they say they suck pretty bad as well. I hear Valley Forge is not that bad, but Marion is horrendous. when I say NMMI sucks, I mean that you will be surrounded by idiots at times and wonder what you are doing and severly question the logic of spending an entire year of your life in someplace you'd really rather not be at. In the Army, you have to make the most of where you're at. It just gets hard to do at times at NMMI, but trust me, it will get you ready for WP.

NMMI is not really hard so much as military discipline or training goes, it just gets to you being so close to your goal but having to take this year long pit stop. It's a mental battle. If you want a more candid opinion of it, just email me.

It did not mean to discourage anyone from going there, I just wanted to throw out my experience. The bottom line is it will get you ready for west point better than any other opportunity you could have.

From what i hear --i know aa class of 2010 at nmmi, he can echo comments above. I dont have the personal experience of screaming eagle --especially tacked onto WP...but his comments seem spot on.

It just seems sometimes you have to make a detour, and make the most of it

I believe last year nmmi, marion and chentworth (sp) in missouri were the options ...i hear reasonably good things abt marion and nothing abt chentworth.

i believe especially if you are int eh bay area nmmi is a no brainer

I can see why going to NMMI or any other civ prep would be painful. I've wanted to go to WP since around 8th grade and to get so close but still have to wait some more would be almost more than i could bear. If that's what happens then I suppose I'll resign myself to it, but I REALLY would not like to go anywhere but WP.

i dont see much difference between flying to new mexico and flying to missouri....

oh but there is

i was responding to

"i believe especially if you are int eh bay area nmmi is a no brainer"....

The plane ride would wouldn't make much of a difference to me if I had a less torturous school waiting for me.

Wentworth isn't a an option this year. West Point had some probelms with their program. If I had been offered CP, I would have went to Wentworth. It's also the most expensive.

Oh excuse me, I ment Valley Forge. Valley Forge would have been the best option and is the most expensive. Both Valley Forge and Wentworth are not options this year. Sucks.

hey man im a sophomore applying for NMMI and I'm afraid I wont be accepted because I really blew my grades in ninth grade if I manage to get kinda below 2.25 this year do you think theyll accept me? any help would be appreciated cause i really wanna go to west point too

is the academy prep hard to get in?

If you are applying to NMMI's high school you will probably be accepted with a 2.0 GPA. Have you looked at the NMMI website to see what the qualifications are? To get into West Point you will need to bring that GPA up and take the most difficult classes your h.s. offers. West Point want to see you can handle the tough academics.

It has been a couple of years since my son had his West Point civil prep offer but at the time the AOG stated only 65 candidates were offered that option. You can attend NMMI or MMI as a "self-prep" which means you are not sponsored by the AOG but you take the same classes as the other acedemy prep students.

That pretty much sums up my son's experience at Marion

Another thing to keep in mind about going to high school at NMMI is that anyone who graduates from high school at NMMI is automatically eligible for in state tuition for college or self-prep.

djfrro - Sounds very similar to what my son would say. :D

Yes, I will have a 2.0 GPA for sure, but I do not know if it can make it to 2.25 as it says on the website. The reason for this (Don't get me wrong, I'm not into making excuses) is because I'm currently living in Taiwan right now and I attended an all-Chinese school for ninth grade, and since Chinese is my second language, I pretty much flunked out on every subject. I'm attending an American school now though, but I kinda doubt it will make up for my poor grades.

Also, since I'm living in Taiwan, it's too costly and too far to go on their campus for their interview. I know I can have a phone interview with them, but will a phone interview lower my chances of being accepted?

Have you contacted NMMI admissions by e-mail or phone? There are many international students there for high school. The admissions people will be able to answer your questions. The inability to make a campus visit and the phone interview should not be a problem.
