I was thinking the same thing. They may be clueless. But it definitely sparked a glimmer of hope in the flavor of “Did the bulk mail snail train arrive somewhere? Anywhere?”
And that was a little excitement, albeit probably unjustified, for tonight. Guess I’ll be checking Twitter now too.
Update: OOOH! Someone just responded and asked how she knew about the qualifying scores.
Update again: in an effort to see if these people exist somewhere, I checked the names on FB. Looks like the “Finalist” (if the same person) is a HS senior in Wisconsin. The plot thickens!
I’ve read this thread for a while and I’m still unsure on how NMSF is announced? Would my GC at school receive a letter and I should ask about it when I go back to school in September? What if I am only commended?
The school principal is sent the notification(s). In the case of homeschoolers, the parent is the principal. That’s why early info tends to come from homeschoolers. No bureaucratic delays!
Some principals let the students know right away, but others do not. It is handy to find out the Selection Index cutoff for each state, which varies from year to year.
Hurricane Harvey is closing nearly all the greater Houston area school districts tomorrow, including ours. The forecast is looking ominous into next week so there’s a pretty high chance S won’t have school Monday either. Our immediate area is not flood-prone but within five minutes drive there are areas that do have flooding issues. Thanks to all who have sent kind thoughts for us in Texas. My main worry for my own family is extended power outages with no AC, but I am of course concerned for the community and especially for those near the coast who are projected to really get hit hard.
But on a lighter note, what else am I thinking? Ding ding ding, you all guessed it…I’m thinking about the NMSF letters getting delayed. Bonus points to anyone who also guessed that I’m thinking about how to ration my cell phone power so that I can justify checking CC and Compass in the event of extended power outage. Is it too late to hit Lowe’s for a generator to keep the modem and router running???
@traveler98 There are battery packs the size of a deck of cards that will charge cell phones and tablets, plus you can pair them with a small (e.g. 12 - 30 watts), foldable solar panel. WalMart and the like may well stock them.
We have a set that we take camping so we can still read Kindle books.
The router? Well, that’s a tougher nut to crack, but I bet you’ll still have cell signal.
@traveler98 my college freshman last year had to be evacuated from her college ahead of Matthew so my prayers are with you all. She had a blast - flew up from GA to NYC to spend time at her sister’s college and then flew home to MN for a few days. School was closed for 10 days in all. As it was an art college with a set curriculum they extended the quarter so she didn’t need to worry about doing work while on “hurricane break”.
Can you move inland a bit and check into a hotel today? That way you’ll continue to have power, wifi and - most importantly - A/C. Expect your letter to be delayed and go off the cut scores that will be crowd sourced. Once kids have access to their portals, someone will hopefully post this year’s essay prompt so that your kid can begin working on that well ahead of any news. If the letter washed away in the hurricane, you can always call NMSC on the Press Release date (or earlier if there is a Hurricane Exception to their release rules!) to obtain the needed login info.
Hi All
Homeschool Dad lurking on the ledge here in FL… I looked through the FAQ for these answers, but did not see them. Do the notifications come folded in a regular envelope or in a flat (8.5x11) envelope? I called my local PO and they were kind enough to look at my box. No letters from NM, but they had not sorted the flats. Also, the notifications sent this week are only for those who qualified for SF, correct? Commended students will get their final notifications in September?
Thanks everyone for all the information and I will post any notices we get ASAP.
Even assuming that Commended is mailed at the same time (which it appears NOT to be), SF status should include a bigger envelope due to login credentials, instructions, etc. Or is that all provided to the principal who then downloads it?
Could it be that this first mailing to schools includes just the list of names of commended, then late September they send the “letters of commendation”?
Any guesses on when we start hearing some news? One person guessed Friday. Would be great! Art seemed to imply it would be well into next week. Thoughts?
I hope we hear something today! My guess is that our school will get the letter on Monday but won’t tell the kids for another a week or so. When we went through this with DD16 they invited all the NMSFs to lunch and went over the process with them. Our school has between 15-20 NMSFs a year so I know they know what they are doing but they feel no urgency to share info.
