MODERATOR’S NOTE:
I’m not sure how anyone thought that a discussion of humble bragging and tiger parents was related to the topic of this thread - it’s not. 10 posts deleted.
@CTMorris1999 My twins graduated from Auburn and it is a great option. His first choice is Ga Tech but I don’t think he will get it. They have an acceptance rate of 18 percent for OOS students and my son, who is going to Samford tomorrow as a freshman, did not get accepted early with a 34 and beautiful resume. We may look at UAH and Mississippi state as back ups. He wants to study engineering. When people say NM students get full rides I am beginning to figure out that those options are at a limited number of schools.
Sigh. We are in the path of Tropical Storm Harvey, and in addition to evaluating my stock of batteries, non perishable food, hand sanitizer and bottled water I am ALSO thinking “darn it, this is probably going to delay the NMSC letters”. I may have a little problem…
Hopefully the good people of north and west Texas will be able and willing to share their NMSF info while I check my house for storm damage.
:))
Stay safe traveler! I am hoping it won’t be too bad for you!
Just created a thread for 2018 results:

@traveler98 , stay safe and high and dry!
Mentioned to my S18 last night that he may hear from GC this week or next re NMSF. He was more excited than I thought he would be. I think he wants to see which of his classmates and friends will make it.
@traveler98 Stay safe and you, your family, and your house are in my prayers. I mainly am a lurker, but wanted to give a shout-out to all the ledge walkers - may the results go your way, and the scholarship packages meet your needs. The sense of community, support, and stress relief (can you say “clam farts” has been very comforting to this first timer mom.
Called National Merit Scholarship Corporation office this morning, letters were mailed to high schools on Aug.22
Thanks for confirming, @Oakmomdad!
Anybody else anxiously waiting on other stuff beside word from National Merit? Our school hasn’t released rank or GPA for the end of last year yet and should do that very soon. GPA I can calculate but rank is anyone guess. Historically they release the new ranks on a Friday afternoon to try to minimize the high school drama so I’m hoping for tomorrow but I just read that the GC’s will be visiting senior English classes on Monday and Tuesday to talk about college applications so I wonder if they’ll wait until then? They won’t even release transcripts until Sept. 1st
We are lucky, I think, that our county doesn’t do the class rank stuff. Is it a stressful nightmare for the students?
My kid is antsy, waiting to know for sure about NMSF. All the college apps are done and ready to send, except for that “Honors and Awards” section. I must say, the college mail has increased significantly this week.
@prodesse officially our school is non-ranking but by Texas law they must rank the top 10% because of the 10% rules (7% for UT) it’s a big deal for kids that want to go to state schools. Also at graduation our school recognizes Val and Sal and the top 10 students they are at the head of the line. The top 10% get cords but they are still seated alphabetically. I know it’s silly but since we have a last name that starts near the end of the alphabet kiddo really wants to be in the top 10, also some of the scholarships he been looking at request rank. So yeah, it’s kind of stressful, especially when you combine it with the endless waiting for new of the National Merit cut off.
@3scoutsmom That would drive me crazy. As it is, our child’s school doesn’t do awards until the beginning of the following school year and I see no worldly reason for that. Waiting for transcripts or class rank or any other measurement would have been hanging off a ledge!
I don’t want to add how stressful ranking is in Texas… I did not know back when my kid was going into 6th grade that others were taking a Foreign Lang that counts in the high school GPA and rank. So my D missed out.
So D is already starting high school behind the other “high stat” kids.
Same thing here. I found it a little crazy our school still hasn’t released some data from last year. The Admins were practically pushing the kids out of the way a few months back so they could start their summer vacations too. Now that they’ve been back in the office a week before school restarts, I hope they catch up with all the old stuff and start checking their mailbox!
@BingeWatcher, that is maddening!
I did a search for #nmsf, #nationalmeritsemifinalist, and #nationalmerit. Nothing recent.
@prodesse , your post just inspired me.
So I decided to do a quick search on Twitter just now and saw that a woman (stranger) posted, “Congrats to (name) - finalist for National Merit Scholarship Program.”
I’m unable to see where she’s from. She posted five hrs ago. Think she’s a homeschooler who received word?
@Kayak24, thanks for sharing. That’s an interesting tidbit. It could be a homeschooler or perhaps a parent with a special connection to a school administrator in-the-know.
Just re-reading your post. It’s interesting to dream that perhaps this is the leading edge of the flood of information and we may learn some things this week after all!. But without knowing the state or the SI, it isn’t super helpful for anything. Also, if they said congrats on being a “finalist”, rather than a “semi-finalist”, it may mean they don’t really know what they’re talking about.
