NMSF qualifying if you move from one state to another

Hi,

Brand new member here - first post.

My daughter took the PSAT as a junior last year in CA, and got a score which is right on the boundary. However, we moved to WA this summer, and she has registered in a new school.

For qualifying purposes, will she be counted as CA or WA? Do we get a choice? (WA seems to be one point lower than CA and since she's right on the boundary, this could make a difference.)

Also, I understand the NM qualification paperwork goes to the school. How can we change our address with NMSC? I tried to call and their office is closed.

Thanks!

Welcome to CC, Cynara. We moved mid year last year and I had the same questions.

The way I understand it is that they use the state cutoff where you lived when the test was taken. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I called NMSC when we moved and they asked me to mail a letter to them with the change of address and school.

At this stage, they would have already mailed the packet to your California school. You could call the GC there to see if your daughter received the packet. If she qualified, then you would need to contact the NMSC ASAP.

Hope she made the cutoff either way!!

I think, in fact, it is the state of the high school in which you took the test that matters. This can be significant for home-schooled, boarding school, and border-state students. I confess to being less-than-certain about this, however. (Boarding schools can be grouped into their own regions depending on their demographics, but those regions are are still state-dependent.)

Thanks for the responses and welcome, pamayawaa and Descartesz. I’m sorry to hear that since California has such a high cutoff usually, and at 220, she is only one point above last year’s cutoffs. We’re on tenterhooks since it looks like so many of the state cutoffs are rising this year…

I think her counselor got fired, so I have no idea who to call at her old school. I guess I’ll have to wait until NMSC opens and give them a call.
