I know this is kind of late, seeing as how I have to fill out the FAFSA and CSS Profile by the 15th, but I'm not sure what to do. I've told my dad several times he needs to file taxes, but still has not done so. I know you can estimate or whatever but I'm not sure how to do that? What will I need as in paperwork to fill out both the FAFASA aned Profile, and how can I easily do this? I have the 2005 tax forms, if that helps.

You can use the 2005 tax forms as a guide, but it's best to use the last pay stub from everyone's jobs to estimate income. You do NOT estimate your assets...those have to be what is REALLY in those accounts as of the date of your filing (even with a "will file" status which is what you do when you haven't completed your taxes). So...in addition to something that will help you estimate income AND the taxes you paid in 2006, you will also need bank statements, asset statements (for things like dividend producing accounts), and any other assets you or your family hold AS OF THE DATE of your filing. There is a FAFSA worksheet...do that first. It makes the filing of the FAFSA so much easier. However, also go to the IRS website and print out a 2006 return as some of the line numbers are different for the 2006 return and those will be the line numbers referenced on the FAFSA worksheet and form. I think there is a Profile worksheet also. For the Profile, in addition to the above, you will also need information re: home value and equity. In our home, we have found that it was helpful for the student and parent to do these forms together. OH....and another thing you really need...PIN numbers...the student needs one and one parent needs one to file the FAFSA online.

Hmm..yeah, I'm in the same boat. I filed fafsa and css yesterday...dad hasn't done his taxes yet. and he's self-employed, so he doesn't have 06 w-2s anyway. This sucks, I don't even like..understand the filing and stuff...I've never had a job.
So I sent letters to a few schools today after I faxed them my parents 2005 returns and mom's 06 w-2s today. Not really sure what I should do..the whole process is entirely too confusing. They said that you can use your 05 returns to estimate some of that, and dad knew how to do it..so I'm not worried about that part.
when do I send the 2006 returns? do I have to?

I hate the fafsa.
