I'm an international student applying to a few undergrad schools for Computer Science as a freshman for 2015 fall session... I'm terribly nervous as I've little info about US universities, all that from the internet itself... And I don't even know where do I stand as an international applicant according to my scores.
Please help me with some advice regarding my scores and colleges I must apply to...
My SAT 1 score as per my practice tests (I've registered for the Dec SAT) - some 2180
SAT 2 Scores - 800 Math level 2 and 800 Physics...
I've already applied to UCSD and UC Berkeley... But I'm pretty tensed that getting in UC for an international is too tough?
I'm also willing to apply to CMU... Please chance me and suggest me a few more good colleges to apply to...

I think that CMU will be more difficult to get into for CS specifically than the UCs, only 170 students or so. But Berkeley CSE is also somewhat difficult, however you can also do CS in the Arts & Sciences college.

Grades and rigor of coursework is important too, not just scores.

Do you have any other criteria aside from a CS major? Are you a full payer, seeking no aid?

@BrownParent - Hmm, i know Berkeley would be possible maybe above 2200… I can only hope that my subject test scores provide an advantage perhaps… Would u suggest any other colleges i should be applying to apart from UC and CMU?
As for the grades, they must not be a problem as i have straight A(s) in all the subjects in my 10th grade… Will get my 12th grade results in April.
And i would probably be a full payer…

Berkeley Admit Stats 2014

International Students

Admitted/Total applicants 1,356 / 13,260
Admit rate 10%
Avg gpa 3.89 (avg of applicants 3.68)
Avg SAT 2124 (ave of applicants 1992)

Where else to apply sort of depends on what else you want. Do you only want the tippy top school or do you want to be sure you are admitted to a few good ones? Do you need a name brand to be known in your country? Do you have a preference for large public research universities or smaller privates? Do you want a tech school or are you interested in a liberal arts college with strong CS? Do you care about location or weather?

Strong Public Programs

UIUC
Univ Maryland College Park
UT Austin
UW Madison
Univ Michigan
Georgia Tech
(UW Seattle, but I would’t apply unless you especially want it because only 200 total direct admits to ECE, hard to get in later, not enough seats)
And there are a lot more very good ones

Privates, including super reaches
Cornell
Harvard
Princeton
Columbia
MIT
Caltech
Stanford
Harvey Mudd if you like small intense tech

and a lot more very good ones

@BrownParent - Thanks a ton! That list has surely given a great deal of info! I have a much clearer view as to where I am gonna apply… As per my preference for a private tech, regardless of location and weather…i think i will try for the low reaches - MIT and Stanford…along with the ‘within reach’ (I hope) - Georgia Tech and the 2 UCs i’ve already applied to…
(MIT and UC Berkeley have always been my dream colleges)

If you don’t get into those colleges (although I suspect Georgia Tech will be happy to have you and your money), are you willing to go to school in your home country? If so, great, you don’t need a safety, but if not you should identify at least one school where admission is pretty much guaranteed.

OK you can try for MIT and Stanford but that is super reach, reaches for everyone so consider that you won’t likely get in. Those are just wishes, concentrate on the ones you might get into first. The strong publics are easier.

@whenhen Yup… I am afraid too (as I told earlier)… So i have a couple of safety colleges in my mind… I belong from India, and I am preparing for the IITs as well… Thanks
@BrownParent Yep MIT and Stanford are a little impossible for me, being an international… I’ll still give it a try though…
