No Freshman Internship?

<p>So, how much am I hurt if I didn't find any internships the summer after my freshman year? I just finished my freshman year at UC - Berkeley with a 3.8 GPA but I couldn't land any internships at all. I know of a few freshmen who got some kind of finance/business-related internship.</p>

<p>Getting internships feel like a race to me of a sort. If I'm not able to land an internship this year, then next year's internship offers will go to people who did have the internship work experience. With my limited experience, I see it as a vicious cycle.</p>

<p>Is it possible to still make a comeback without the freshman internship? I have to admit that whenever I think about this, I feel a bit like a failure. I've even been contemplating that I'm not cut out for business and I should switch to a different major or career path.</p>

<p>wow a 3.8 at berkeley, youre fine. do volunteer work or local government, but dont expect it to be paid.</p>

<p>Most of the major related internships I’ve looked at require you to be at least a junior. How did they get their internships?</p>

<p>xelink said it best, get a part-time or full-time job at a bank. Its worked for me so far.</p>

<p>cabhax, you need to look at more than online listings as a freshman. At that level it’s all about networking, but it can be done and I’ve done it as well.</p>

<p>I agree with the others about doing something, though. Working at a bank seems like a great idea, and working for a nonprofit or volunteering somewhere would look a heck of a lot better than doing nothing!</p>

<p>I didn’t think many people do freshman internships. I though internships were mainly for juniors and seniors and a few sophomores. Seriously, a PT bank teller position should not be difficult to come across, although you are in California, so maybe it won’t be so easy.</p>

<p>Finance major here, 3.48 GPA. I tried (albeit half-heartedly) to get an internship this summer. I kept applying to any open position I could find on the Internet. I even cold-called small local firms and offered to work for free. Some of them were seemingly put off by the fact that I was a mere freshman. There were no offers, no interviews, nothing. Given that, I ended up cashiering at the local grocery store (which is still better than nothing, I suppose). </p>

<p>I think my biggest problem was my resume: It sucked, in retrospect.</p>

<p>Oh well, there is still sophomore summer… I will actually go to the career center next time around instead of swimming the ocean alone.</p>
