No Interview for a New Yorker??

I know that Columbia says that the lack of an interview is in no way indicative of the strength/desirability of the applicant. But it seems strange that I didn't get one. I live in NYC. Why would there be no available alumni here. I have gotten an interview for every other college I applied to. I assume that NYC has a surplus of alumni for any college. So why couldn't any alumni from Columbia interview me? Any other New Yorkers that didn't get interviewed from Columbia?

When did you submit your application? I think that was one of the main driving points behind whether or not you got an interview. I submitted for regular decision in November and got an interview in December. I’d imagine if you submitted later, the vast amount of applications would hinder them from interviewing everyone.

I submitted a RD application around Dec. 15, 15 days before the deadline. Is that considered late? Every other college managed to find an interviewer, though.

I also live in NY and did not get an interview. Don’t think anything of it – just wait till Thursday.

Same, live in NY, no interview. I also wouldn’t be surprised if a huge portion of the applicants are from NY, so even though there are a lot of alumni, there is an equally huge NY applicant pool. Or at least, that’s what I’m thinking.

I live in NYC, no interview. Don’t think it’s anything to worry about.

Thanks. Glad to hear I’m not the only one.

Yeah, NYC is home to a ton of alums who volunteer to interview…but it’s also home to tons of applicants. Remember there are over 30,000 applicants each year. If just 10% live in New York (which is definitely too low an estimate), that means 3,000 people to interview. Do you really think the admissions office has 3,000 alumni interviewers in New York alone?

(This back-of-the-envelope calculation brought to you by Frontiers of Science.)

Anecdotally, I didn’t get an interview when I applied two years ago (early) and still got in.
