No kitchens at IV?

I will most likely be attending NEU and I’ll be living in IV freshman year. However, I heard that there are no kitchens at IV and that worries me.

If I want to boil water, fry some eggs, or whatever, would I be able to just enter some other residence hall and use the kitchens there? Or are we not allowed to do that?

No kitchens in IV - no shared public kitchens on campus - you can have a micro fridge to use to cook and there are public microwaves in the student center.

I also got an electric hot pot that I used to boil water and make simple stuff like mac & cheese or ramen in a pinch. I think that’s not technically allowed, but as long as you don’t burn down the dorm or do something stupid, it isn’t a problem.

Yeah, no freshman dorm has kitchens. After your first year, all of the apartment style housing (most upperclassmen housing) has full kitchens.

If you had an upperclassmen friend, you could cook at their place. Otherwise, assume you’ll be eating the meal plan and all first year.

Required to have at least a 10-meal plan in non-apartment housing.

I have a coffee maker, rice/vegetable steamer, boiled-egg maker, and microwave in my dorm. May get a crock pot at some point, too.

Kitchens open up in the $5000-7000/semester range after freshman year

@julianstanley

Kitchens are available in housing as low as dorm prices (4K) and as far as I know, the most expensive housing is 6k (studio single with kitchen).

@PengsPhils Your low range is right - I was thinking of single prices. And actually, further, economy triples are 3,300.
My high 7000 range was referring to the $6825 for a single bed in Willis and 6600 for studio in west E which admittedly are outliers

@julianstanley
Ah, thanks for the info on the high range - I only saw studio singles in 780 Columbus when I was looking last year, which is closer to 6k. Makes sense the WVE ones are more.

I think I would die in an economy triple. 3 people sharing 1 room and no living room to escape each other.

My son had an economy quad his first year. He didn’t die but it was a close call. That kind of housing experience puts any lack of a kitchen in a nice dorm like IV into perspective.
