No news means good news...your thoughts!

Does anyone think that truly applies to the graduate application process?

Are you referring to pre-interview news or post-interview? If you have yet to get an interview offer for a PhD program, it is bad news. Even if you have interviewed and still not heard anything, it is not a good sign. I know that some spots are available towards the end of the deadline where people are taken off the wait list, but that also has a low chance of occurring (unless you have been informed that you are high up on the list).

I can’t speak for masters programs, but it seems most PhD programs (at least in biological sciences) have made their decisions. There is one school that has yet to inform me, but I was told during the interview that their decisions come late.

I would suggest contacting the schools and asking about the status of your application.

Eh, no. Generally no news during the time the school usually sends out interview requests or acceptances (which differs widely from school to school) is bad news.

Why is this bad news? Wouldn’t they send out the obvious rejections early on? I am wondering the same thing as the OP. I haven’t heard back from 4 out of the 5 English M.A. programs (rejected from the 5th early on) and I applied in September. I was hoping this meant I had a chance since I wasn’t outright rejected. What do you guys think?

I think it depends on when the program’s normally send things out. Check gradcafe results. If you don’t hear when others have heard, that’s usually bad news. If you don’t hear, but the program does things late, or later than you expected them, of course it is fine.

Honestly, all depends on the program. Each department at different schools have its own admissions process. It is frustrating for the applicants to be left hanging but there isn’t much that we can do.

Clawsworth, you may want to contact those 4 schools and ask if they have reviewed your application. Ask them to give you a timeline for being notified of decisions.

Have you checked to make sure your applications were complete? I can understand if you were waiting to hear from one or even two schools. The fact that you’re still waiting to hear from 4 schools this late in the game seems a bit odd. Go to the grad cafe site and check the “search results” page.

Thanks nysmile, I’ll contact them on Monday. My applications are all complete, but I was worried about calling them because I didn’t want to bother them. I checked gradcafe (thanks for that bit of information by the way – that site seems very helpful) but it doesn’t look like any English M.A. applicants have posted their results.

Also, if this makes a difference, these are four Canadian institutions.

Only news I got early was bad news.

I say give time until end of April. If some student decline the offer, the acceptance letter might fall on to you.
