I don't know when I first wanted to go to Berkeley or why but when I researched it I knew I had to get in. But when I started telling people were I wanted to go they always said it was imposible. One of my teachers even laughed when I told her. But I just need to hear it from people who do know what it takes to get accepted. Here are some things that might help.

GPA 3.6
California resident
New SAT 1638
School Activities: Marching Band (4 years including next year)-drummajor (highest student position, Key club (3 years)-treasurer one term, SADD one year, trying to get into leadership
Out of School Activities: Alter Server for 3 years-coordinator for 1 year
Job experience since summer of Junior year
Minority-Hispanic

Juan, as a hispanic, you will stand a better chance at a private college of Cal's calibre than you will at Cal. As everyone reports here, it's illegal for them to consider minority status, although I think they do. At UCB, however, blacks are sorely lacking, not hispanics. Your teacher is correct that Cal is difficult for a 3.6/1638. We need more info, though. What is your UC GPA? Your class rank? Have you taken honors and APs?

u'd be surprised. many hispanics get accepted into berkeley from california. i'd say it's a toss up. a crap shoot. and affirmative action can work wonders/hilarities/crimes depending upon your outlook.

UC GPA is 3.7 and my class rank is top 6%, i know it will go up after this semester though. I have taken honors classes: Geometry, Algebra 2 and Math analysis, English, Biology, Physics, World History, U.S. History. Ive only taken one AP Class though, AP English Comp.
