One of the reasons why I chose to go to this college is it's boasting about internet speeds etc. Well, after a full daily schedule and studying is it asking to much for a little fun in my dorm room, online gaming is something I like to do, to wind down once in a while.
All the ports for downloading anything (movies, game connections etc.) are blocked.

Is there any other colleges out there that don't allow gamers to play?
The food here is great though!

Well, you can't play such things as xbox live and other online video game systems here. But, you can play all the online computer games your heart desires. I don't see why they'd block those.

Computer Department said it is a university decision, they are afraid that gamers will take away from administrative offices ability to function properly. Well what about after office hours? I can't get a straight answer from residence life or computer dept.

Suffolk University in Boston, for $13k a year,(just for housing) I would have never thought that they would have so many internet restrictions. They certainly don't let you in on any during visits or orientation.
Honors Classes are great, average 15 students
It is a very nice residence Building(2 years old), satelite TV free HBO and such. I've already gone to the North End to Eat several times, Duck Tours, Rail Trail, Walking Tours, Museums, Downtown Crossings, Faneuil Hall etc.
Love the city, but sometimes I need a little "gaming time", especially late at night, I don't go to parties.

I checked with my school before I went. My school has 0 restrictions.

A tip that worked for my freind who went to Utica college.

Go to the IT department, say that you play the game competitivly, in an online league. They should open it up for your room, They did for my friend.

the way my school explained it was that everyone on the internet is on the school's server, and so any virus that gets into your computer can get into other people's computers more easily (cutting down on downloads cuts down on the chance that some virus will f up other people's computers) also when your computer is dow loading things usually other people re uploading from you, which means they have access to the network, and while you may only be downloading 2-3bthings, you could have hundreds of people connected to your computer uploading things, using space on the network. My school used to not have downloading rules, but sometime last year the system slowed WAY down and they traced it to roughly 10 people who were downloading an insane amount of stuff, who were using like 50% of the network's capacity

WeiCC. I'm so glad you posted that. I've already applied to Suffolk but now I'll have to think about it. Although I don't play as much as I used to I do like my on line games to wind down too. I'll have to check out the other colleges I'm applying to.

They should disclose that information during Orientation or even better during the tour of the dorms! There is also no downloading of music, movies or anything else of that nature. I needed to download something from the collegeboard website and couldn't, so I had to go to the bookstore and buy the book with the info in it that I could have downloaded for free.
Other than that Suffolk is a great school for Pre-Law, Gov't! The new dorms are great, and the food too!

at penn state they have like 100mb of bandwidth per week (or something like that) and if they go over that amount they get "kicked back" to a 56k connection for the remainder of the week. I'm not sure what happens if they do it more than once. I know many schools don't like you playing video games simply ebcause of the affect it has on the network with connection speeds and scuh.
