I finally got the information to check my application status on the websites of some of the colleges I applied to. It turns out my counselor never sent in my school report/counselor rec. I don't really blame him - he has over 100 seniors to juggle, and I bungled things a little initially, too. He assured me a couple weeks ago that he sent in the school report both by mail and online, which I found suspicious because it still said the school reports were not received on the Common App website.

What would be the most appropriate course of action to take from here? Should I have him upload to the Common App website, or send them in by mail - or both, just in case? I don't want to give him an unreasonable amount of work to do, but at the same time, I'm kind of nervous that my application won't be "complete" by the time they start examining them seriously. Do I need to send any kind of note of explanation to the colleges? Currently, my counselor isn't responding to my emails, which is kind of disappointing, but I'm hoping to be able to talk to him by Monday.

Finally, I just want some reassurance that I won't be penalized heavily in either admissions or financial aid for this. Is this true? I assumed the colleges are still sorting through paperwork by now, especially since they say they may send emails in the future asking for materials if they are still missing.

If it helps, I'm applying to Pomona, Chicago, Grinnell, Swarthmore, and Harvard.

Do both. Because your counselor is busy and he might miss again. It’s reassurance.

Yo, this is your application we’re talking about. It’s his job, and he knew about this “unreasonable amount of work” when he signed up to do this. You already know a ton about college admissions so I’ll stop talking here.

Wait…why are you using common app for school reports? You mean midyear/secondary school reports and transcripts?

Because at my school, the guidance counselors send each individual school that stuff by snail mail. No uploading to common app.org involved…

You should be checking each schools “application status checker” on their websites after receiving passwords/usernames from each college by email. NOT commonapp.org.

And you wont be penalized. No worries.

My school specifically tells us to list “common app” on schools that have common app.

Well have you checked the school’s individual websites to see if they have received the materials? I would think that’d be more accurate…

^I did, which is what I’m basing this on. One school says they’ve received it, but I think they might mean the School Report Supplement instead.

However, you can upload school reports via Common App.

Thanks guys!

So, does everyone agree with what melin said?

Also, do I need to send a note of explanation or should I be fine?
