Is it bad if one were to go through their entire high school career without ever doing a sport? Could they still get into a decent college?

Plenty of people have gotten into the Ivies, top ranked LAC’s, and top 25 USNWR schools without ever having played a sport. Just check the decision threads :)

I’m sure tons of us don’t do sports, me included. The most I’ve ever done is being forced to do the freestyle relay at last year’s swimming gala and a cross-country race this year (because nobody else wanted to do it). So don’t worry- we’ll all do fine [:

Playing a sport wouldn’t hurt one’s chances at getting into a good college, but definitely is not needed.

I didn’t, and I didn’t have any extracurriculars either, and I got into BC (the highest ranked school I applied to)
So there you go :p

do you enjoy sports? I personally couldn’t live without sports and I think being the captain of my soccer team was a nice addition to my resume.

Having said that, if you don’t love sports and aren’t ready to really commit to them, don’t play. It’s like having a job after school sometimes- everyday practices for 2 hours, waking up at 6:00 in the summer and playing for 4 hours per day… If you don’t really enjoy the sport it will be hell for you

The problem is that I’ve never been involved in sports, so I don’t know what I like. I mean, of course I’ve played football and soccer with my brothers and neighborhood friends throughout childhood, especially when I was younger, but I was never exposed to playing on an actual team. I wish my parents would have put me into tee-ball, little league baseball, youth soccer, youth football, or some sort of sport so I could have that experience. I’m going to be a junior next year and I have no interest in sports. Not only that, but how would I make any of the teams with my lack of experience and skill? I mean, as optimistic as I am, I still doubt I would.

From the perspective of the colleges, is having a job like having a sport? How do colleges view having a part-time job after school while still maintaining a decent course load, making decent grades (i.e. straight A’s), and having a few EC’s?

Ten years from now, you’ll probably regret not doing any sports during the (arguably) best years of your life. No friendships with teammates? No focus on physical fitness? No reward from victories? And all just so you can spend slightly more time on homework and get into a slightly better college? Not worth it, in my opinion.

I’ve never played a sport in high school, but I LOVE sports (especially golf, football, and basketball). I play religiously with my friends in pick-up games and am a pretty solid athlete. I just decided that I didn’t have the time commitment to and team and felt like being president of Debate and HOSA would be more rewarding in the end.

Let’s go JETSSSSSSS!!! Got this championship on lock! Check out that article on how boss our D is in Sports Illustrated :)

i too LOVE sports

but if you don’t, then don’t do it. simple as that. how college view it doesn’t matter for this. you either want to, or you don’t. don’t fret about it if you don’t do any sports though. i just find it incredibly fun and i make a lot of new friends from the tennis team.
