My son has applied to 8 schools using the CA. All submission and payment e-mails arrived minutes after submission. The submission e-mail confirmation for Carnegie Mellon Univ. has never arrived, though the payment confirmation did (10/1/13). Dashboard indicates all parts were successfully submitted, along with PDFs of "submitted app and writing supplements". E-mails to Common App have resulted in canned responses ie. e-mail may be in spam, which it is not. Son e-mailed CMU and is hoping to hear something, but they have only begun to process the apps. From what I've read, if you do not receive the confirmation e-mail, the app did not go through. Son cannot register for an audition with CMU unless they have received his app.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

It may take days or even a week for the school to send you a confirmation as they may not download or process your record yet. Most schools do that by batches. It is not like online application directly to the school that you may get a notice much earlier.

Thank you for the reply. This is driving me around the bend because this is a school he very much wants to apply for having participated in their six week summer pre-college program.

So, just to be sure I understand your answer, if the college has not downloaded the app, the submission confirmation from CA will not be generated? The other schools must had an automatic download process because this is the only application submission that did not generate an e-mail within minutes.

No. Your submission is confirmed by CA and it is ready for the school to download. It is up to the school to download the applications from CA. The CA would send you an e-mail upon submission. But the school may take days to over a week to download the applications from CA and enter into their system before sending you an e-mail. At least for one school I have talked to (which has been doing CA for 2-3 years only), they download the applications once a week and may be twice a week when it getting closer to deadline. And they did not even start their first batch of downloading until last week. They said one should expect an e-mail a week or so after they downloaded the apps. Of course, each school may have a different schedule. Some schools may download data on a daily basis. For that particularly school, I was advised to submit application at least 2 weeks before deadline so there would be enough time to allow the application enter their system and allow me to track the application around a week before deadline so I may take some action if there is anything missing.

I appreciate your responses. My problem is Common App did not send a submission confirmation. I googled and came upon a page from University of New Hampshire and they said that if you do not receive a submission confirmation from Common App, then the school did not receive it. The Dashboard etc., all indicate everything has been submitted, signed, etc. The little trash can icon is muted. There are statements on the dashboard stating all was submitted and the date along with PDF of the App and the Writing Supplement. Common App sends canned e-mail responses and there does not appear to be a way to call them. Essentially is appears they are holding the app hostage since there is no way to re-submit on my son’s end. Thank you again for your help. I’ll update if there is a solution.

Have you called CMU?

I e-mailed them and included my son’s CA ID number. They have just begun to process applications and my son’s was submitted on 10/1 so even if it made it through it will probably take a while for it to surface. CMU probably thinks I’m jumping the gun, but the lack of CA submission confirmation was absolutely not usual.
I’m just so frustrated with the Common App folks. My assumption is they could fix the issue but based on the responses I’ve received through e-mail it feels like I’m getting the canned responses a computer would generate. Thanks for the help and the opportunity to vent!

Ahh. Now I understand. When did he submit that application? I just asked my daughter and found the supplement she sent last night right after an application also did not receive the confirmation. I think there is some issue with CommonApp (again). We created a support ticket at CommonApp. The application was sent fine though. The problem was at around 9pm EST last night.

The phone number only let you leave a message with CAID and e-mail address. It does nothing more than the online ticket support which is useless. It keeps blaming the e-mail filter while there is an error detected on their site.

I called CMU on Thursday. I would have had my son call, but he is in rehearsals every day after school, and frankly, I’m the one who is going batty over this. The phone rang three times and then a real person answered! The woman I spoke to reassured me that there was not a problem, that they are processing the applications in batches. I was very specific that my son did not receive a Common App. submission confirmation, and she said she understood, and when son’s app is “processed” we would hear from CMU. Common App. has not replied to the e-mail sent to report it had been a week (tomorrow it will be 2 weeks) and still no submission confirmation. I feel a bit better, but I am very disillusioned with the Common App. organization.

I fully understand. It is too bad that CMU is not helping you. I got pretty good response from the school.

CMU admissions was wonderful. It is the Common Application organization that has been unresponsive. Initially I received e-mails that basically regurgitated was the CA website said. Now I get no response at all.

After 2 tickets of useless response, the third one finally got their attention 3 days ago and they said they will forward it to the special technical team. I have not heard back since then.

Just received an e-mail from CMU thanking son for applying!! Hopefully this will help anyone else who did not receive submission confirmation from CA that it is possible application went through OK. Still have not heard back from CA, but from what I read in the NYT, they are having many and varied issues. Thank you all for the help and suggestions.
