So, I’m filling out my UGA application right now. I got to the part called “Summer Activities” and I realized that I don’t have any. I’m just thinking about how terrible it’ll look to leave an entire page blank.
I did do a program at the local college over the summer, but I was instructed to put that under the “colleges attending/attended” section, and you’re not supposed to put anything down twice.
Usually I just go visit my family over the summer and then spend a lot of time by myself, which has resulted in a blank summer activities section . . .
So, how screwed am I? And is there anything that can make up for that gaping hole, or not?
I’m not sure attending a summer program at a college means you are attending (i.e. enrolled in) that college. My D did a summer engineering program at our state U and that was not put under “Colleges attending or attended.” You should double check this information because you don’t want the admissions offices to think you are a transfer student or already enrolled in a college elsewhere.
Even if you have no summer activities, you aren’t screwed. Only the selective schools are looking to see what else you’ve accomplished outside of the classroom. Any hobbies or interests? Your activities don’t have to be organized or part of club or team. They don’t have to have measurable outputs. If you like to cook, repair cars, draw comics, garden, fish…whatever. Put it down. It shows that you have interests beyond school work. Do you babysit? Take care of siblings or work in a family business? Put it down.
Thanks, N’s Mom. I guess I’ll focus on my hobbies, then.
And for the summer program I was technically enrolled. The admissions counselors explained that while it what we were doing was given a silly name and our schedules were slightly different from the freshmen’s, we were still in college and had to list the school as a place we had attended.
I couldn’t think of the phrase last night, but it was dual-enrollment. So no worries about being considered a transfer
I’d include the college program, and also anything else you did in the summer that wasn’t watching tv and hanging out. Did you work a job? Babysit? Mow lawns? Learn to swim? Anything?
