"None of those places are significantly (or even remotely) more prestigious than Duke; Emory and UF are significantly lower, too."

"None of those places are significantly (or even remotely) more prestigious than Duke; Emory and UF are significantly lower, too."

--Emory is up there with Duke.

well... cornell and emory is definitely comparable to duke, but i would think that maybe duke has slightly more prestige.. like comparing Northwestern or MIT; Brown or Stanford

Emory "Slightly" less than Duke? Cornell is definitely on point, but I dunno about Emory. I applied there and the kids there were mostly Duke/Upenn/HYP?Stanford rejectees.

On a side note: Emory has some of the most beautiful women ever!

Edit: Are you sure that NW is comparable to MIT in terms of prestige. I know it sort of depends on location, but MIT is up there with Harvard in domestic prestige. Also, Brown and Stanford are not equals IMO. Stanford is just as prestigious as HYP, is Brown? Notably, I know Duke is slightly NOT as prestgious as HYPMS.

the line gets foggy sometime when u get up there.... like HYPSM are all sort of equal; one can try to argue that harvard is more prestigous than MIT, but then, im sure tons of people might reject harvard to go to MIT. northwestern has a big name here in michigan... a few guys from my schools did not get accepted at northwestern but was accepted at harvard. one of them was really mad and wrote a letter to northwestern "so u dont wanna accept me eh? well guess what! im going to HAARVARD.." i didnt think that was nessecary and rather immature, but still. one can argue that northwestern probably didnt want him because he was probably arrogant, or that they knew he wasnt gonna come and so didnt bother accepting people that wont show up... but i still think... it makes no difference if u went to caltech or MIT... the big difference would be,

if u turned down princeton for american

sure. I agree 101%.

I can't remember exactly, but I think "Virginia" or "Mount" might have been in the name. I'm sorry that my answer is so vague, but I really can't remember the name.

I'm sorry, but Emory is not on the same level as Duke. It is an amazing school, with an outstanding primate center and a substantial endowment, but I challenge you to find one non-financial ranking that puts Emory ahead of, or even within 5 spots of, Duke.

incollege88: In the early/late 90s, Emory was ranked in the top 10 by US News....

And what was Duke ranked at the time?

In 1998, Emory jumped from 19th to a five-place tie for 9th in US News. The next year, it fell back to 16th.

Duke was ranked 3rd (tied with Yale) in 1998.

That was the only year Emory was in the top ten. In 1991 and 1992, it wasn't in the top 25.

I'm just sayin...

I don't think columbia ever was ranked higher than harvard, but its not a big deal if someone rejects harvard for columbia. duke might always be ahead of emory in terms of ranking, but i think in terms of experience/education qualitity/future success, it won't make TOO big of a difference if one school is 10 places ahead/behind another.

Wouldn't it be nice if people were to justify their rankings, even if it's just citing "US News and World Report's edition from 2005" or whichever magazine or article, instead of just saying statements such as "Harvard is number one. It just is, everyone knows that." Based on what? It's obvious in some instances, such as percentage of accepted students who enroll . . . but perhaps they aren't across the board. Anyway, cite your proof or reasoning for considering one school above another in any sense.

I haven't read every single ranking there ever was made, but all the U.S. News from the past 3 years put harvard as #1
then it was #1 on some rank for gradschool feeder score
and top 5, i dont remember if #1, for lowest acceptance rating (probably yale)

HYP pretty much dominate the top of the list. Other schools, though, have had mobility. For instance, Wash U has climbed up over the years, and Emory has dropped.

wash u like.. caters everything to getting higher in the rankings though, doesn't it? that's really sad

Buddy is going to NYU instead of Penn - he thought it was a natural decision

(obviously never came on the college confidential boards lol)

afaforce - yeah, but it works to their advantage, making it look a lot more like a hot commodity for prestige-hungry US News readers (lol). They've definitely made a mad climb.

thethoughtprocess - your buddy would've been slaughtered on CC, lol. Unless he preferred Stern over Wharton or something like that... but NYU's CAS I probably can't understand. Unless he really likes the village.

i heard somewhere that nyu is everyone's dream school nowadays.. like #1 where people wanted to go these days

I heard that too on Netscape. Some weird poll. I bet they didn't poll enough randomly-selected people.

NYU is all right. My interest in it waned after experiencing it.

yeah, he chose NYU CAS for English over Penn's English department

I thought Georgetown was like the dream school?
