my friend turned down william and mary, washington and lee, and fordham for a full ride to VCU

Check out the PSU site. Basically University Park is the main campus. Only 20% of Freshman are accepted there. (Based on scores) The others need to spend at least the first year or probably two in one of PSU's satelite campuses located throughout the state. (Erie, Abington, Lima). Many kids complete their education there while others move to UP Junior year. On the Penn State site you will see that the avaerage SAT range for Freshman at UP is a good deal higher than the others.
The Penn State Honors Program is located in UP and their stats are comparable to Ivys.

My S turned down Bowdoin, Tufts, WM & Mary, Oberlin, U of Rochester, Colgate, for Schreyer College which is the honors college at Penn State

so would u guys pick schreyer over nyu?

I know someone who turned down Amherst for USC. I would never do that, but I do see that she fits in more at USC. Anytime a student does this, they are really 'playing it safe.' I would never hedge my bets like that, but many people are less risk-taking than myself, and that is fine. For instance, I would never want to just become a pharmacist. But many people do, and they make pretty good money.

well it depends on money

my friend picked schreyers over cargenie mellon, other friend nyu over penn, and other friend schreyers over nyu

go figure?

I would pick Schreyer over NYU without any hesitation, unless it was to an arts program at NYU.

haha... its... business/premed i think; he wants to be a doctor and then open a hopsital/clinic... or just a doctor but then it would be research - genetics/biomed...

Location could play a role in that decision. Manhattan vs. mountains; both have their attractions.

A friend of mine chose Schreyer over Columbia and Vassar. It really is a very strong pull; like a top LAC in the middle of a big state university.

Just learned the top student at our local HS, unbelievable scholastic profile, accomplished musician and composer, and a zillion other unreal traits including humility-- turned down Harvard and others for the University Professors Program at BU.

what's a university professors program?

D chose Bryn Mawr over Amherst and Wellesley. Money was not the issue. She simply loved the fit more at Bryn Mawr that the other two.

is bryn mawr also a women's college?

Yes, it is.

also is deceptive. Amherst is not an all women's school

A friend of mine chose BU (full-ride) over Duke. Obviously a financial issue.

Haha is it obvious because of the schools, or because of the friend? The University Professor program at BU sounded amazing, and i'm glad that i learned about it. Is BU that bad, or is it the friend who is that in need of financial assistance? I think of BU as equivalent to USC academically.

what exactly does the university professor program do?

A classmate from highschool turned down Harvard for BYU. I think it was the religion factor though.
