I recently discovered that I will be unable to make any varsity teams at my high school and I am not going to be awarded a varsity letter for any of my sports.

How bad are my chances hurt by this? I am continuing in advanced classes and am active in community events and am command staff in my police explorer post

How can I compensate for this? Will having a good CFA score be good enough to make up for the athletic portion of my file?

For the class of 2013, 1,172 of the 1,299 appointments were varsity team members.

That’s 90%.

So yes, it’s possible to get an appointment without varsity sports, but you better have an overwhelming package in all other aspects.

A good CFA helps, but sports (team sports, especially) are valued for much more than their physical fitness aspects - teamwork, small-unit cohesion, dealing with advance/setback, honorable play, scheduling while maintaining high grades, etc.

One only needs to read the words of General Douglas MacArthur:

Upon the fields of friendly strife are sown the seeds that upon other fields, on other days, will bear the fruits of victory serves as the bedrock philosophy for sports at West Point.

MacArthur believed, the training on the athletic field, which produces in a superlative degree the attributes of fortitude, self-control, resolution, courage, mental agility and of course, physical development, is one completely fundamental to efficient soldiery.

My high school does not offer a mens’ swim team due to lack of interest throughout the history of the school, there is only a womens’ swim team.

I could not participate in football this year and my track team is a very competitive and selective team when it comes to varsity letters because they don’t cut. I’ll try for my Rifle team varsity letter but there’s no guarantee anywhere right now.

I feel like my chances have seriously died down because of this? Is there any other hope?
