'Noles vs. Gators? Who cares!

What's up with the Seminole vs. Gator rivalry? Maybe I don't understand it because I'm not yet officially a Gator...but c'mon now. It's kind of annoying to be honest. FSU is a great school as is UF - it's just the type of environment the individual thinks he would best flourish in. I've seen 'Noles complaining about "arrogant Gators" and Gators jabbing at "inebriated 'Noles"..at least on this forum. This got in the way of finding out definitive information as it was hard to wade through the biases and see what was really going on at each school.
So I ask you, fellow Gators and 'Noles, to come together, at least on this forum, and help the student decide which school is best of him. :P
Oh yeah, and kindly explain that rivalry..it's just kinda..silly.

This has to be the worst post ever. FSU is the worst school and their sports are awful.

GO GATORS!!

^^^ Ha, Ha! So much for a truce!

UF is just better, and only getting better.

FSU is all UF Rejects, and therefore they get so bitter that over the years they have built the rivalry up. Okay, that’s a joke, but the fact stands that it’s great to be a Florida Gator :)

Rofl, FSU lost to USF in Football. REALLY? USF? Weren’t they just a community college two years ago? Okay, another joke… But really. UCF is catching up to FSU and fast.

Anyway, if you haven’t figured it out by now. UF>FSU

“FSU players don’t cry because they’re used to losing.” Join the group on facebook!!!

^ It’s because of people like you that I chose FSU Honors over UF Honors… You give such a great school a horrible name.

We are out of staters. My d applied to UF ( no other Fl school) and was admitted. We were not familiar with this rivalry until reading CC posts. Vertigo–you are completely correct. But it sounds like you won’t get an answer on this thread. We are turned off to UF based on these comments and while we won’t rule it out, UF has certainly lost its allure.

Vitrac, how can you NOT know of a rivalry between UF and FSU? Do you never watch college football?

“Rofl, FSU lost to USF in Football. REALLY? USF? Weren’t they just a community college two years ago? Okay, another joke… But really. UCF is catching up to FSU and fast.”

lol, UF has to play USF in week 2 of next years college football season. After talking like that you’d better hope USF doesn’t pull off an upset. =P

^^^ Too, maybe USF and UF will get to play each other next week in either the NCAA or NIT basketball tournies. That’d be fun!

o___O
…FSU is full of UF rejects…orly, then why is it that they have many respectable alumni in addition to a full-fledged particle accelerator of their own? They are an extremely solid state school in Florida, and I respect the professors and top students there as much as I would at the University of FL.
As you can see I am choosing UF and I believe that a minority of the people there are as, simply and coarsly put, arrogant. I enjoy campus diversity and the opportunities offered there.
Perhaps I am searching in the wrong places…internet forums are not a true reflection of, or an accurate representation, of the student body at any institution.
Cheers.

Vertigo, never go to a football game, the SEC is all about mutual hatred. It’s all in good fun in the end, I talk trash to my friends who go to FSU, they talk trash to me, then we sit down and grab some beers. No reason a rivalry has to be a bad thing, often rivalry drives people to excel in order to compete against their rival.

In the end, UF is higher ranked public institution (15th versus 48th, according to US News and World Report) and we’ve beaten them 6 years running on the gridiron.

I guess you are oblivious to everything. Every state has their in-state rivalries. It is usually xxx state vs university of xxx. And others that arent that catagory. Rivalries are just plain old fun because we’re bored and we want to have bragging rights. It’s in our nature. Go Gators.

I hate to say this but you are one the most misinformed posters I’ve ever ran across. You might as well not send your kid to ANY university because every one of them has a rival. I recommend just sending your kid to your local community college so they feel more comfortable with the environment. I’m serious.

It’s so true, even Northern Illinois State has its Rivals. Everyone who knows about this stuff knows about Harvard and Yale’s rivalry.

It’s called school spirit. It’s a good thing. You should be proud of your instituition. Are there dumb people who take it too far? Of course. But if your school has no rivals, that mean your school is below everyone else. Rival implies a type of equality.

Ya - school spirit is awesome! That’s one of the reasons I love UF. The Gator Nation is so powerful! But, I think it’d behoove some UF students, or at the very least, posters on the website to really consider the facts when responding to posts. I was run around in so many circles because of one bad trip or one bad tour guide experience  And for that - the rivalry is annoying :stuck_out_tongue:
We’ll see if I feel differently once I get there though.

You guys are delusional if you think the UF v FSU thing is exactly the same as it is at most other colleges… I’ve visited quite a few campuses and they ONLY talked about their college, not what the other one didn’t have. When I got to UF for Shadow Day, the first thing my shadower told me was that I was making a smart choice by considering UF over FSU because only the rejects went to FSU (and she showed me two triplets whose brother had gone to FSU when he didn’t get into UF).

The main problem with the rivalry is that both schools aren’t facing reality.

Some UF fans seriously have delusions of grandeur. UF is not the “Harvard of the South”, as some zealots who likely don’t even go to the University have claimed. UF is a solid schools academically, analogous to Penn State or University of Texas Austin, but ostensibly better than FSU. In a lot of programs they are ranked very highly, but they still are basically a state university.

On the other side of the coin,

some FSU fans have an inferiority complex. Sorry but your school isn’t close to UF academically in terms of student caliber and the quality of some departments (in before p2n pontificating about FSU’s meteorology and Mag Lab) And yes, FSU does have a lot of UF rejects. UF and FSU are the only two traditional universities in the state, and I know plenty of people who relegate to FSU after being rejected by UF as they cannot go OOS. You would be hard pressed to find the opposite scenario (a student going to FSU after being rejected by UF).

That is not to say FSU is all UF rejects. Far from it. I know plenty of people who are lured to FSU by the Honors programs and the additional $9,600 scholarship.

Objective rankings, US NEWS, ranks UF at 47 and FSU at 102. Yeah, thats a rather large discrepancy to be calling the schools comparable. I could name other ranking agencies that will show a similar rankings.

Ultimately, the choice of the school depends on the individual. Outside of Florida, both schools with have the same reputation, perceived mostly as big Florida party schools. For somebody to pick UF over FSU solely because it is ranked higher is ignorant.

Both schools have their merits, but the fans and alumni of both institutions need to face reality.

“objective rankings”

Thanks for that lol. I needed it.

Dnerd, if you are set on FSU, why are you still here?

It almost seems like you are trying to defend your decision.

Besides US NEWS is more objective than your or my opinion. Feel free to offer any contradictory sources.

Here is a 2009 Washington Monthly that ranks UF #26 and FSU #107, with FSU just behind Florida Institute of Technology.

http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2007/0709.natlrankings.pdf

I’m not defending anything… I actually agree with most of your last post. You made me laugh because you think that any kind of ranking like this as a ‘whole’ can be objective. I don’t go posting “omg don’t talk bad bout mah school.” I just saw this topic and provided my own insight and personal experience. You’re the one going on the FSU board trying to defend UF when no one was attacking it in the first place…
