Someone told me that her daughter is being "recruited" by Yale, including an offer to waive her application fee. She is not an athlete, and she said Yale has no financial information (as is normally done for requesting a fee waiver). I had never heard of this. Does Yale do this?

No.

Only Questbridge applicants and applicants who provide financial information are eligible for a fee waiver.

Actually, an applicant does not have to provide Yale, or any college for that matter, with financial information to obtain a fee waiver. A prospective student must provide their guidance counselor with the financial information and the GC will fill out the above form and submit it to the college.
With respect to being recruited, Yale Athletics does not recruit non-athletes, so that part is way off base and not true.

“With respect to being recruited, Yale Athletics does not recruit non-athletes, so that part is way off base and not true.”

I did not mean that “Yale Athletics” was recruiting her. I was asking about Yale “recruiting” someone, other than an athlete. (or is she just misinterpreting those pamphlets and letters that Yale sends out to tons of HS seniors.)

Re post 3:

From the Yale Admissions webiste:

“If you wish to request a fee waiver, please provide the following information when you fill out the Yale Supplement: the combined annual income of your family in U.S. dollars, the number of dependents listed for tax purposes by your parents, and a brief statement of additional circumstances that should be considered in a review of your request.”

Joskeet: If your friend is basing her conclusion on the glossy brochures that fill her mailbox, she needs to understand that those materials come from Marketing, not Admissions. They’re designed in part to boost the number of applications colleges receive and have no bearing on a candidate’s admissibility.

@wjb: I understand what Yale has on their website, but the pdf and instructions are from NACAC (National Association for College Admission Counseling), which has held some of conferences on Yale’s campus, so I’m pretty sure Yale accepts the NACAC form, as well.
