Are there any non audition bfa or ba dance(ballet) programs at colleges?

What do dance kids do for safety schools? I'm helping my son's girlfriend with her search for ballet programs in colleges. She needs a NJ safety; low cost and easy to get into with high level ballet classes.

Thats a good question about safety schools. I know my daughter did not consider any of the ballet programs to which she applied to be safeties, but she chose not to apply to any non audition programs. I dont think this is unusual. Her alternatives were academic programs. I think she felt that if she couldn’t be accepted to a ballet program she wanted, she would major in something else.

I dont know about NJ schools, but Northern Illinois University has a BFA in dance with excellent ballet. Scholarships must be auditioned for, but the program does not require audition for admission. The university has academic scholarships which are available to out of state students. My daughter did not end up applying here but liked the program when she visited for a day. The faculty was very good, the school stages I think two full length classical ballets each year and the students do a lot of dancing, with daily ballet and modern classes. There is a very nice theater where the works are performed and the department had a very friendly vibe. We saw some well trained dancers there.

Thanks quill. I suppose she will end up taking the same approach as your daughter. Maybe even forgo college for a gap year and try to join a company.

I don’t know of any place you can major in ballet without an audition.

As far as BFA dance programs in NJ that should have good ballet, she would want to look at Mason Gross, Rider and perhaps Montclair. In New Brunswick, anear Mason Gross, there are plenty of excellent places to attend class in the area, including some that she could walk to.

The better programs generally require auditions, from what I have seen. If your son’s girlfriend dances at a pretty high level she might be disappointed with the level of training at some schools. I have learned a lot watching YouTube videos of various productions at different colleges, and looking at the credentials of faculty.

Thanks all for the replies. I think your right about being disappointed about the level of dance in schools that do not hold auditions. I suppose I just want her to have a sure thing.
