Hi all! Know I know that there are are a lot of forms on this already but I'm new so...
I'm a junior in High school (Ive been an online student since Since last school year). I've never took any dance classes but I have been on a lot of Hip-Hop dance teams since third grade, I also had been on my last schools Show choirs since middle school up until my family moved to another part of the city. I was wondering do colleges with dance programs consider my Hip-Hop or Show choir past. I also want to know what schools do not have any audition proceed but only placements. I've never did Ballet or modern since I'm on the heavier side and also because my family has never had the funds for me to bevel to take the classes. So please if anyone can answer my question please do.

The schools will certainly take your experience into consideration, but I would caution you about applying to too may “audition” programs, since you’ll be competing with students that have years of ballet and modern.

The college guide from Dance Magazine has some really good information about all kinds of dance programs,
and I’m sure that you’ll be able to find a number of schools that have programs you’re interested in.
Additionally, depending on what your other more academic interests are, consider that a number of medium to larger schools have competitive hip hop teams, as well as other ways for you to remain active in dance.

Thank you for the reply it was really helpful! I found that schools like Barnard, UC Berkeley, and Goucher have it where they give placement auditions in the class that’s right for you.

I’m looking into Double majoring with the dance because I would like to be a choreographer so I guess I would have to learn other styles for this career.

Once again thank you for the help

You may want to look for schools that have Arts Management degrees, which you could perhaps combine with Dance as either a minor or as a dual degree. Going in declaring an Arts Management major at a school that has a well developed audition-based dance major could provide you with the opportunity to take dance classes - even the lower level ones - with some outstanding teachers.

Be sure that you have plenty match and safe schools as you create your list, as many of the best Dance programs are are the smaller, private schools that brings in the additional element of affordability.

So complicated… sigh.

I meant to add that as a choreographer or someone seeking a career in dance, having Arts Management skills will provide you with an advantage as far as aligning with a company or individuals who are looking to hire you for your choreography.

While you wouldn’t have to consign yourself to company manager status, remember that many professional dancers in companies (no small feat, btw) have second jobs. It’s nice when the second job can be related to the field that you love, rather than waiting tables to subsidize the rent.

Thank you everyone who replied to my question and giving me some great options to think about
