Non-BCMP courses during the summer, and maybe at a CC....

Common Wisdom indicates that University students shouldn't take BCMP courses during the summer or at a CC.

However, my gut tells me that Adcoms won't care if you took a psych class or socio class or frosh comp class at a CC during the summer.

What say you?

S took Biochem in summer (not a CC), so I guess there are exceptions to Common Wisdom.

D2 took an anthro class in the summer–but at her own college since she was working on campus for the summer.

D1 took 3 summer math classes (that were not pre-reqs, but to complete major requirements) --but again at her home uni.

Can someone clarify…I know that there will be some socio and psych questions on the new MCAT. But does that mean that med schools have added those classes as strict requirements or are they optional?

I’m thinking that the basic premed BCMP requirements shouldn’t be taken over the summer of at a CC, but it’s ok if it’s an extra math or extra whatever class…or a sociology, psych or frosh comp class.

“S took Biochem in summer (not a CC), so I guess there are exceptions to Common Wisdom.”

People poopoo idea of taking BCMP courses during summer because, in part, people think student is trying to get around demands of semester system. Then it just hit me, S’s school operates on quarter system so summer quarter is equivalent to Fall, Winter, Spring quarter and not a shortcut, so not really an exception.

well, it would be a short-cut if during the summer quarter the student was only taking 5 credits or just 2 classes. If the student were taking a full load 15+ credits, then it wouldn’t be an exception.

You’re right. S was full time that summer.

I guess you have to buy MSAR or search out each school’s website. Here is link from Bryn Mawr which lists additional UD science course reqs of some schools in 2015 and also states in part:

“In addition to science and math prerequisites several medical schools also require specific coursework in behavioral science, psychology or social science. You should carefully review information about these requirements on each school’s web site because there are different specifications for which academic disciplines meet the “behavioral” and the “social” science requirements. “

Since my kid is already in med school, I don’t want to buy the MSAR, etc. I was just wondering what folks knew about any of my mentioned issues. I don’t need to info for my own family…

D took 2nd semester of Physics at a 4 year college near our hometown during Maymester, so that was really a shortcut, and it didn’t seem to hurt her. But I don’t know if that is generally true.

@dheldreth‌

I’m not sure if Physics would almost be in the same category as frosh comp and others. I’m thinking that rule really applies to Ochem I and II, and maybe Bio and Chem I and II.

Probably not the same. But it is currently a prereq for most med schools and MCAT, so it may be one that should be taken at a student’s school during Fall or Spring.

Yes, it is a prereq for nearly all med schools. My gut tells me that Physics just isn’t as important to med schools as Bio, chem, and ochem…but maybe I’m totally wrong. lol

^^ Thank goodness, in my D’s opinion! She didn’t like Physics at all, and took it during Maymester because she just couldn’t stand spending 14 more weeks at it. It was the reason she struggled with the MCAT - even with the Kaplan course she couldn’t raise that component. Fortunately, adcoms cared more about the rest of her app.

My son is taking sociology now but his premed advisor told him that he really didn’t need it. But a lot of schools on MSAR list it as either a requirement or ‘would like to have’ class.

I’m glad that my son went thru this before socio and psych became recommended. He’s a bit of a brat and may have flunked them. lol.
