Non Custodial Parent Waiver Denied

I recently applied for a waiver for a non custodial parent for a certain school and had it denied. Now I have to hand in a lot of tax documents. The problem however is that I do not have any of these documents because this parent lives in a different country and has not seen me in almost a decade. I have limited contact with this parent and they are not a citizen therefore he does not file taxes or anything.

What should I do now regarding my situation because im assuming my other schools will deny my waiver also.

Did your non-custodial parent file the non-custodial parent Profile? If not, your financial aid application at the school where the waiver was denied is not complete and probably won’t be processed.

Call the school financial aid department and ask them what to do.

Did you apply to any colleges that require only the FAFSA…?

Different colleges may give different decisions about the NCP waiver.

Presumably, you put all of the “NCP waiver needed” colleges in the “reach” category, since there is little information about how difficult getting such a waiver is at each college (so one must assume that it is a “reach”).

Do you have safeties which you know you will be admitted to and which are affordable without needing anything like an NCP waiver or a competitive merit scholarship?

Sorry to hear that your waiver was denied
Since they have denied your request for a waiver, you have to either produce the documents of your non custodial parents or your financial aid package will be considered incomplete and you will not be eligible for financial aid from this school.

Whether you call it a reach or not, this college now sounds infeasible. Don’'t start to think you can make up for a high cost/fin aid issues by taking large loans.

Obviously, once the NCP waiver was denied, that college has moved from “reach” to “rejection”.

But other colleges requiring the NCP waiver should be considered “reach” at least until an NCP waiver decision is gotten.

You need to contact the school directly (phone call) and explain the situation. See if there is any other way to resolve it.

If you cannot arrange to have your NCP complete their parts of the financial aid paperwork, kiss this particular college good-by, and move on. Focus on the other places on your list.

As others have written here, each institution sets its own policy about NCP waivers. This denial is not predictive of how other institutions will handle things.

Did you ask the NCP to fill it in, as you do have contact? Foreign citizenship and foreign tax documentation isn’t a reason to not ask him to do the application. Define contact?

What was the reason for the denial? If it was because the school thought there was contact with the NPC, and there is no contact, what do they expect you to do? I’d contact the school and ask them what you should do if you cannot get the documents. It may be that they expect you to do the impossible and the school has to come off the list.

Limited contact? In what way? And when?

There are lots of students with divorced parents who do not see their non-custodial parent in person…but still have some way to contact that non-custodial parent. It sounds like that is your case…is that correct?

I have contact via social media however that is it. I also dont have regular contact as the last I communicated with this parent was my birthday last year via facebook. I don’t have an address, phone number nor do I know what they do for a living. The parent has little to no knowledge about me applying to college and has not given any financial help for a decade.

I applied to other schools that don’t require the Non Custodial Parent however most of the schools that do require this are my reach schools. It would suck if the reason I dont go to my dream school would be because of something that I have no control over.

What did the schools ask you in terms of info about this waiver? Is there any chance you answered a question incorrectly?

I agree with the above poster who suggested you call the college(s).

Many students can’t go to the perfect college because of family circumstances and finances. My kids had to eliminate a lot of colleges from consideration because I couldn’t afford them. They didn’t spend a lot of time worrying about it, they just found other schools. FAFSA only schools work just fine.

Love the schools that love you back.

If you are Facebook “friends” with your NCP, then presumably you can spend five minutes online and figure out a way to contact him, no? Send him a message on Facebook (the same way he wished you a happy birthday) and explain your predicament. He remembered your birthday, and he has access to a computer. So you might not be in regular contact with him, but you COULD be…
