Greetings CC'ers!

I just had a quick question pertaining to the non-filer's statement for students...

I'm not filing my tax returns. From my summer internship, I made like 3k, so I decided not to file it.

On the non-filers, they ask for how much you made from jobs and all that jazz from 2009. Can I just not report it (even if I was working on the books)?

THANKS!

Also - I missed a few deadlines for Financial Aid docs. I sent my Fafsa and my CSS on time though. Vassar, Amherst, Smith & Williams do the IDOC thing...the rest of my colleges don't. Hopefully, I'll be mailing that out next week - when my dad files his 2009 taxes.

I forgot that Smith had other forms...that were due on February 15th (so that, I could not send with the IDOC docs). I missed Wesleyan's deadline too. And I guess Bard? But they didn't specify when they needed supported documents! Will that jeopardize my financial aid? I DO, however, plan to send out the 2008 docs and the 2009 W2's tomorrow.

Also, for the IDOC, they only ask for 2009 stuff. For Williams, they wrote "Do not send copies of state income tax returns or 2008 income tax returns to IDOC." Does that mean that Williams (and the other IDOC schools) don't require 2008 documents?

THANKS!

My apologies for the lengthy post. I'm just freaking out slightly over here!

It sounds as if you are not really taking all this as seriously as you should. Yes, you need to report your income, even if you are not filing. That is what “Non-Filers” is for. Also, what I am interpreting to be your laisez-faire attitude about missing deadlines is not good. Missing deadlines is very serious. As has been said on this site many, many times: deadlines are imposed for a reason, and students too often think they are not meant for them. Please try to revamp your attitude and understand that if Financial Aid is in your future, you need to be straight, forthcoming, honest, and timely about applying for it. It is a privilege to receive aid from schools, not a right. But it needs to be justified and applied for in the process that exists for all. So, yes, missing deadlines could very well jeopardize your funds. Perhaps not, but it is certainly possible.

It is likely that you will miss out on financial aid by missing deadlines.

It is possible if you call the office and ask them to forgive your lateness, and submit the documents required immediately, that you may still receive financial aid.

Financial aid is a very serious matter for many students. It doesn’t seem to be for you. Hopefully your parents can afford to pay for you to go to the college that you choose from your acceptances.

If you have specific questions about what documents to send to Williams you should call their financial aid office.

Thanks for the replies.

I’m by no means irresponsible or careless, just a bit confused and stressed out.

Another question - for the IDOC, they require 2009 tax returns. However, if those would not be available by March 1, should I just send the 2008 ones instead or send all the other documents first, then send the 2009 docs when they’re available? I know that it takes time to process IDOC docs and sending them to college board next week or something might mean that the college will receive them after the deadline (March 1)

Any suggestions on the matter?

Thanks.

If they require 2009, then send 2009. Why are you still asking questions as if you are not really reading and understanding what is being said here? You can’t just substitute what you want to substitute, apply when you want to apply, on your own schedule! You need to do this by March 1 because, that is what you are being told to do. IDOC wants everything in one packet, so do it that way. Why are you waiting so long to do your taxes? By law, W-2 forms had to be in hand by the end of January, or early February. This is not the year to be putting off doing taxes. Sorry if seems to be so stressful for you, but you are putting some of the stress on yourself at this point. Everyone who has been through this process has had to do the same thing.

Thank you very much for the well worded answer, Franglish. It all makes sense now!
