Non-Rehire List Help

Hello All,

A few weeks ago, I began working in a job that will remain unnamed. This job was basic, entry level, and has nothing to do with my degree or career path.

Right now I’m a going to college full time with 18 credit hours. I told my employer I could only manage about 20 hours a week of work, and the latest I could work in the evening was around 2 A.M. (I have some 8 A.M. classes). Despite telling my employer this and requesting a change of schedule, I was consistently scheduled third shift until 4 A.M. on school nights and up to 35 hours a week.

So, with my grades beginning to slip and having trouble staying awake in class, I called in and quit the job. They told me I’d be on a non-rehirable list if I didn’t wait two weeks. But I have exams in one week, and I really am crunched for time so I quit anyway.

I’m concerned however about my status as non-rehirable. I would never apply to work at this employer again, but can the status affect my other career opportunities? I have a 3.9 GPA and excel in many aspects of my life, but this has me worried.

I will be taking the employer off my resume and Linkedin to avoid future potential employers from contacting them. But I know some employers do background checks.

Will being a non-rehirable for such a rudimentary position hurt me? :frowning:

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn’t worry about it especially since not in your career path. It’s obviously a job to help you pay bills while in college and I wouldn’t put it on your resume anyway when seeking employment in your field. Yes, they may blacklist you within their field but really, you gave them a warning and have a valid explanation. Employment at will means you can quit at any time and two weeks of course is a courtesy and a way not to burn bridges since each industry is a small world but in your case it is quite understandable. I quit a job while in college many years ago with a phone call (for valid reasons) and never looked back. Plus for references checking in my years of experience as a hiring manager we always ask the candidates to supply their list. Background checks also require your signature. Sure, people informally talk and provide info if someone knows the candidate but I highly doubt in your future career from a different industry your potential emplyer will randomly call this place from Linkedin.

It won’t be an issue at all. I agree that you (OP) should remove the job from your LinkedIn page though. Employers do contact previous employers in different industries if the person they’re considering is a recent grad. Employers want to know about applicants’ teamwork, reliability, etc. Since you’re still in school, there won’t be any red flags raised because of date gaps.

It may be an issue if a potential employer asks your previous employers if you are eligible to rehire.

Not to worry. It’s fine.

A potential employer can’t ask a former, if the job is not listed. And for the most part, you only list what’s relevant on a resume or LinkedIn, (with a few exceptions.)

I find it hard to believe a prospective would just blind call based on LinkedIn. Iirc, I’ve always been asked first for permission to contact former employers.

OP, you worked this for 2 weeks. You’re a student. Agree, not a problem.
