Non top 10% admission decisions information

All over the nation, not by a long shot. A TAMU degree isn’t going to get you very far outside of Texas, because it’s perceived as a very rural school and not as an academically strong institution. I will be the first to tell you this thinking is flawed, but simply put, outside of petroleum engineering TAMU has no national reputation.

Inside Texas it’s a very good degree, and the Aggie alumni network is very strong and VERY loyal, and it will get you far.

Just heard about this study on the radio: More than 3/4 of adults born in Texas stay in Texas making it the “stickiest” state in the Union. How can you go very far outside of Texas if you never leave?

theloanranger is so full of it.

Ya, I agree.

IgotinUT, well, I’m not going to UT. So it was mainly just to see if I could get in. I had alot of friends saying a non top 10% student couldn’t get into the Cockrell School of Engineering. Well, I did :-), and I didn’t have killer ECs or killer SATs. Just a good student.

DP

Chaos, does it make you feel good to rub salt in the wounds of people who are hurting right now?

Do you have the maturity to realize that by boasting about taking a coveted spot at UT," just to prove that you could," you are just proving that you are a jerk?

As an adult, I am amazed sometimes at the callousness that is shown on these boards. I wonder if these kids understand that karma can be a bit@h…

chaos, I don’t think you’re being stuck up. but theloneranger, I see stupidity overflowing out of your mouth.

Damn, this years’ admissions decisions were ridiculous. Man I must have messed up a lot…my bad.

Even I wouldn’t have made that big of a dick move chaos.

Hi, I cant believe it but i got in UT austin. I was not in top 10% rather in top 19% and I got in my first choice major (Electrical Engineering). I have been so worried about getting in, and finally the day has come. For those not in top 10% and who don’t think you’ll get in, all i can say is to write good essays, send a professional resume, and have many extracurricular hours.

Stats:
Rank = 19%
ACT = 23
GPA = 4.55

If you have any questions, let me know!

I take that back. chaos, you are a ******

The admissions process is not a game. It is a waste of time and money to apply to schools that you have no interest in attending just to see if you can get in. On behalf of the engineering student that didn’t get in, Chaos, find another forum to frequent. You are neither helpful nor entertaining.

As for everyong else - as soon as you know you will not be attending a particular school, let them know. They can offer admission and/or scholarship money to the next one on the list. Many are still wainting to hear from other schools.

To Chaos: **** you.

To MonaUT: Grats on getting in…I guess this **** is just luck. 23 ACT and 19%? :/

I’m still not over the CAP-ING. I clearly care much more than others about attending UT. Also, not to be boastful, but I am also much more qualified than some of the ******bags there.

Here’s to misfortune and bad luck, cheers!

user3725 - hang it there. I am sorry you did not get in. If you CAP, it does go by pretty quickly.

OOS (yeah that reads “OOS”) from FL

Accepted for fall

1180/1710 SAT
26 ACT

rank 24.89 or so

PHENOMENAL ESSAYS (A, B, and C)

I’m really shocked to see so many not top 10% getting in will SAT’s under 2000 and ACT’s under 30.

It was reported in some newspaper this year would be harder to get into than last year.

Whats up?

AMom2 well when you say you’ve seen “so many” is that like what, 5? 5/2000 isn’t very significant you just happen to notice it more than those with high SAT scores getting in.

And I’m sure they had good essays and ECs. The SAT test is kind of a joke. When I studied for my ACT math I had to go back and review what I learned back as a freshman. I guess it’s an okay challenge for “average” kids that never took honors classes, but it definitely isn’t a sure indicator for intelligence. Some schools have even stopped looking at it in their admissions decision.

I think UT specifically left spots open for OOS applicants. (maybe for the $$$?, I don’t know)

I also have a sneaking suspicion, and this is totally a conspiracy theory, so might be totally wrong - in other words, this is my opinion and mine only - that admissions were skewed somewhat for shock value this year in order to get people inflamed enough to contact their state senators and demand reform. UT has been trying for years to get the law changed, so all the controversy of kids who are 12% with 1500 SAT’s (example only) not getting in might help their cause…

What do y’all think?

I also think though that some spots are left open (this may be ending soon as more spots are taken by top 10ers) for kids who have compelling applications - economic hardships, unbelievable dedication to something, fabulous essays, etc. Those applicants were very lucky that on that day, at that time, the right admissions person read their application and decided that they would pull for them. That’s what we all hope for in the admissions process - that something will stand out and get an advocate on our side.

This may be a thing of the past though if all spots are taken by top 10% kids.

Wow, gpow, which major?

I’m still waiting for mine. HUGE chance of being rejected, but I hope not.

I don’t think UT made their decisions to get attention, but I don’t think they mind it one bit! They have tried for years to get this law changed as they knew what was coming. Aggies better pay attention, because they are going to experience the same thing.

Actually, I am a little surprised that the CAP rules have not changed for this year. Imagine if many of the CAP’s students accept, make the 3.2 and go to UT in 2010. What would they do with all of them? I bet the rules change for the following year. It used to be a 3.0 for automatic transfer, I bet they move it up for the 2010-11 freshmen or don’t offer CAP’s to almost everyone.

AG54, I think you might be right about the money and the shock value…obviously the university needs to accept OOS because they get more money for them…this year does seem to be “crazy” as far as there is not really a rhyme or reason with the admissions except for the top 10%. It just goes to show that you should never say never…anything can happen.

Flatxca, I “think” the cap gpa is 3.2 now…
