My Decision: I am waiting on a decision from UNC - Chapel Hill. If you have not gotten the gist yet, I live in NC so I primarily applied to schools within NC.
@Anxious56 Deferred means they would consider your D a good candidate but they need more time to make a final decision, which will be in March. I do not know if you know this, but in the letter they sent to all applicants who applied EA (Early Action), they have in the letter when your D views it the deferred link. NC State Admissions answers some questions.
Based on the results of applicants who have been accepted, it seems they accept people who have decent GPA but their standardized test scores were high enough to get in. If I may ask, what did your D get on either standardized test scores? This is probably the reason why D got deferred. It also hurts when your D’s dream major is in one of the competitive schools within NC State.
I can attest to this because my GPA is high, I am in the Top Five in my class rank but my standardized test scores were average. I know students in my area that I had stuff higher than them but they got accepted because of the standardized test scores, which is a bummer.
I agree with your attest. My son attends the #2 high school (2016), high GPA, decent ACT scores, captain at school team, plenty of leadership. But he is deferred as well. Yesterday I watched NC Spin and the host was talking about starts this year, NC university systems are enrolling more low-income, rural areas, and minority students into RTP universities. My son’s classmates got in Standford, but not NC State. So, go figure!!
Also, NCSU is enrolling more out-of-state and international students, for they are the cash cows for NC. No wonder they raised substantial tuition on those students a couple years ago to pay the way for big economical boom in higher education.
@GojiBear15 Yup, like I am number five in my class, my GPA is 4.46 out of a 5, but my standardized test scores were SAT: 1080 and ACT: 23. I am not one for standardized test scores and plus, I am poor so I cannot take it anymore. I also take college classes with thirty college credits and thirty one high school credits so far but I got deferred. NC State is not really holistic; they are looking at one number or two number rather than the bigger picture which is why my College Access Counselor told me that I should watch out for NC State and apply for UNC too since UNC does their applications holistically. Plus, I held some lead positions and high positions within the clubs I was in so I was just confused as to why I was deferred but I see now.
For your son, I would not sweat it as a fellow senior. If you son applied to UNC like I did, it would be a better chance since they are thorough.
My son was also deferred with a 3.99 GPA (4.875 Weighted). His SAT was not as high as he wanted 1220 - I know a boy that is dual enrolled at a local school and at NCSSM and he was deferred as well. It says to get your grades up in the email but How do you get your grades higher than Straight A’s
Damn. I also do ham radio and thought that was a big factor in my application. I was accepted and you can see some of my stats on page 4. If I get into VT I’ll be going there. I got deferred early decision from there, as expected. Best of luck.
Decision: Accepted
Major: Materials science & engineering
Residency: Staying in India but OOS (Texas)
ACT: 30 ACT
IB Predictive- 39/45 or 37/42
Decision- My first acceptance, still have wait for 6 more colleges. But inclining towards this college.
I feel my essay was great.
Congratulations to all accepted and good luck to those who have been deferred.
@sunshinemiracle@GojiBear15 thank you for your input. Yes she’s an A student and her Act was 28 and SATs 1230
It does seem like an overly complicated process.
