North Carolina State University Decisions for Transfer Students (Fall 2017)

Hey i am at UNCG i have a 3.23 GPA, taking Chem right now with an A+, Bio 112 with A-, with respective labs with A in both, and the rest of my electives are A. I hope to have my GPA at 3.4 by end of this semester. I applied for Agriculture Science which is a 2.5 GPA req but they prefer 3.0 and above GPA. What are my chances? Also i have a 1260 SAT

@UNCGstudent1

Looks pretty okay to me. As long as you have English already, you have everything you need. Your current GPA is a little below average compared to last years (3.29), but your most important courses seem to be As, so hopefully, that will balance it out. And like you said, it should be a 3.4 by the time they get your transcript.
If it makes you feel better, according to the admission status report, a little over 50% of agriculture & life science transfers were accepted, which is higher than the 35% acceptance rate of overall transfer students.

Thanks for that, Yea my GPA is at 3.22 exact and I am not getting below a B+ in any course, (I got a C in College Writing 1) Apart from that I have had 2 other C in Pre - Calculus and Psychology. I also have a 1260 on SAT and idk if thats good. I just need to make sure I can keep a 3.3 or get higher by the end of the semester. Also is the 3.29 for only Agricultural Science majors?

Also @gbrl10 is it fine to be in a 3.2 - 3.3 range? for GPA

@UNCGstudent1

The 3.29 was the average GPA between all accepted transfer students. The SAT doesn’t really matter. I talked to someone who accepts applications for transfers and she said that for transfer students they ONLY look at the grades. The only reason they would look at anything else – like the essays – is if there was some weird exception. She said someone with a 3.65 or above GPA is basically guaranteed to get in. So a 3.2-3.3 is good since it’s the average, but not as certain as someone with a 3.65. But really, I think you’re fine. I would be more concerned if you were applying for an engineer major.

@gbrl10 wow thanks so much, so you think I have a high chance of being accepted where I stand for Agriculture Science? Because I actually want that and with my GPA it would be perfect! Yea i know its mainly grades for them and I have above average for Agriculture and Avg for Every transfer. Thanks for the help. I love that there are people with these connections. Where do u go?

@UNCGstudent1

Hahaha, I go to NC State. I was actually in your position last year. Before, I was simultaneously enrolled at North Carolina Central University and Durham Tech. The person I referred to in the last post came to Durham Tech to talk about what you need to transfer. She stayed after her presentation to answer a lot of questions.

To answer your first question, yes. If you get an A in Chem and Bio, I think you’ll get in. Especially since you have both rather than just one. Another thing she told me is that the acceptance rate is usually low because people don’t read the requirements. I read someone who had a 4.0 with like 55 credits wasn’t accepted because he didn’t have Chem I. You clearly have read the requirements and took the courses equivalent to NCSU’s.

EDIT: I didn’t realize you had both Bio I AND Bio II. You’ve definitely exceeded the requirements.

@gbrl10 To be more lucid, I am currently taking Bio 2 and Chem, so they wont be on my transcript until after this semester so is that going to affect it.

@UNCGstudent1 Yeah. I’m assuming you’re applying for the fall semester. The deadline isn’t until February, so if you send in your transcript late December, January, or even early February, the admission committee will see your fall grades.

@gbrl10 No I am applying for Spring semester

@UNCGstudent1 Oh, well that changes some things. No, they won’t see it. They’ll only see that you are currently taking it. I’ve been basing your chances and all of my statistics based on fall admissions.

Last year, it said that 74 out of the 126 applicants for agriculture & life sciences were admitted for the Spring, so that’s almost like 60%. With only one grade related to your major (Bio I), I’m not sure how they’ll react, but hopefully, they’ll see the classes you’re taking fall semester into consideration.

@gbrl10 Alright thanks, I basically just have to keep this GPA and above a B- in Chem and Bio and I should be fine

@UNCGstudent1 Yup. I really hope you get in. I’d hate to raise your expectations for you to not get in. Good luck!

@gbrl10 Thanks it means alot to get this information, i think that by going into this major for fall next year will be fine the way u say about 3.3 avg gpa for all transfers. Ill have all the classes ready by then without anything less than a B. I hope thats good enough, a 3.3 GPA and all the req classes

I GOT IN @gbrl10

@UNCGstudent1
YES. I’M SO HAPPY. CONGRATULATIONS. HAVE FUN IN THE SPRING!!

I got in for the Spring and will attend!

@transferpack97

Congrats to you too! I know you’ve been trying to get in since Fall 2017. Glad you could finally make it!

For future transfer applicants, these are transferpack97’s stats: http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/20953138#Comment_20953138

I am a current freshman at uncw and would like to transfer to nc state for computer science after two years here, by the time my sophomore year is over i should have the required classes down (calc 1&2, physics 1, chem, etc.) I am also hoping to complete four computer science classes here, which I am hoping will help my chances assuming I do well in them.

Is there any advice you can give me that will up my chances when I do apply? Thanks! I’m super nervous since cs is apart of their engineering school and its competitive

@HazelPrine
I think the biggest thing is just the required classes and GPA. Having a 3.65+ GPA basically guarantees your acceptance assuming you have the required classes equivalent to NC State’s. I, myself, applied only as a freshman (computer science intent) with all the required courses and a GPA of about 3.65 and got accepted (you can see my original post for full stats). Someone from the admissions office told me they basically look at the GPA and if it’s high enough, they accept them and move on to the next application (it doesn’t HAVE to be 3.65, but if you’re going for computer science, you’ll probably want at least a 3.5).
