North Carolina State University Decisions for Transfer Students (Fall 2017)

@gbrl10 I don’t know if you would be able to answer this, but at VT I have two B+ , one A and one D+… Will NCSU rescind my admissions because of this one grade or does it fall under the two C-'s that NCSU doesn’t calculate into your GPA? I called and left a message with a transfer admission counselor and haven’t heard anything. Anybody have this issue before? Does one bad grade mess it up?

@transferpack97
Hahahaha, I had the same worries as you and looked this up earlier this year. NCSU rescinding is practically unprecedented. The only way they would do that if you had some criminal crime or something that happened between now and Spring semester.
So yeah, NC State just won’t count that class as transfer credit (it doesn’t affect your GPA at all since you start with a fresh GPA when you transfer).

That’s very good to hear, did you have a D or D+after they accepted you? I called again and the transfer counselor just repeated: “Final acceptance is contingent on maintaining an academic record better or same as the one who admitted you for”…Not very comforting from NCSU.

@transferpack97
Lol, I think they just say that so people don’t flunk all their classes. I didn’t have a D, but I had 2 Cs. I saw a post on Reddit post where someone flat out failed calculus, so I think you’ll be fine.

@gbrl10 what about ec’s? do they matter?

@HazelPrine
Not really. Like I’ve said before, they basically just look straight at your GPA and decide if you’re in or not depending on your major (an actually admission officer told me this). They MIGHT look at your ACT/SAT if you’re under 30 transferrable hours. But those test are meant to reflect how well you would do in college, so if you have a good GPA, then the those scores are pratically worthless.

@gbrl10 thanks a bunch! hopefully ill be able to get in for cs and go there after my sophomore year

@HazelPrine
No problem! Good luck. If you don’t mind me asking, what requirements don’t you have that you can’t do it this year?

So far I have about 32 credits and wanted to apply for Fall 2018. Some of the majors I’m interested in require a calculus class but I haven’t taken one yet. Will it hurt if I don’t?

@jm42
Yes. A big reason people don’t get in is because they don’t meet the requirements. Last semester I heard of two cases where there was a guy who had a 4.0 and the other guy had like a 3.9 or something. Both of them didn’t have CHEM I, so both of them didn’t get in. I think if you take it in the spring this academic year, that counts, but I would email them to make sure.

@gbrl10 You seem like you know a lot about the whole transfer thing so I thought it’d be a good idea to ask you haha. I’m currently a freshman at UNCW and I plan to apply as an in-state transfer student to NC State for Fall 2018.

I intend to major in Philosophy with a concentration in law and when I checked the requirements they were a 3.0+ gpa, an english composition class, and a college math class. I have completed both the college math class as well as the english composition class. So far, I can not tell you my overall gpa for the year but it looks as if I will be finishing off my first semester with about a 3.6 or 3.7 depending on how finals go.

One thing that I am worried about is the 30 credit hours to transfer, sadly although I will have 31 credit hours completed only 28 will transfer since the first seminar class thats required here does not count for anything at state :frowning:

Assuming that they may ask for my high school stats I mind as well list them here too.
UW GPA: 3.2
W GPA: 3.99
(I understand that these are fairly low but I have a significant upward trend with rigorous courses)
ACT: 24

Assuming that my gpa remains around the same number by the end of this academic year what do you think my chances are?

Also I don’t know if this matters but here are the courses I will have done this year

Fall
English 101 (College Writing & Reading I)
Uni 101 (No Credit)
Mat 111 (College Algebra)
Evs 205 (Global Environmental Issues)
Spn 120 (Fundamentals of Spanish)

Spring
Chem 101 w/ Lab (Gen Chem I)
English 201 (College Writing & Reading II)
Hst 105 (US to 1865)
Par 215 (Bioethics)
Par 110 (Intro to Logic)

I know that the Hst 105, Par 215, and Par 110 all transfer to courses that are required for Philosophy majors at NC State so hopefully that helps.

Thanks!

First, to address your worries. As you saw on the website, it said that they may request your ACT scores and transcripts if under 30 credits. I’m no admissions officer, but I feel like your case is a very common one since all colleges have their weird first-year seminar course everyone has to take. Like I’ve said before, they just look at the transcripts and decide who gets in from there. With the number of courses you have, you’ll just look like every other transcript, even if they do know that only 28 credits are transferable. But like I said, I’m not an admission officer, and I haven’t heard a case yet where someone didn’t have enough by the end of their Spring semester. If an NC State transfer representative EVER comes to UNCW, please go and ask them that question. They are often very straightforward.

Now the other stuff. The fact that you will have a 3.6 to 3.7 GPA will put you in very good standing. The average GPA for admitted transfers last year was 3.42. As I mentioned in another post, for engineering majors, if you have a 3.65+ GPA, you’re basically guaranteed admissions. You’re applying for a slightly less competitive major so you should be fine. Also, you have courses that are equivalent to 300-level PHI courses! That will definitely help you out.

Overall, I think you have a pretty good chance, assuming I’m right about the admission officers not caring about the number of credits. If they have to look at your high school grades and ACT scores, they’ll obviously see that your ACT scores don’t matter since your GPA is above average and that your work ethic has improved since high school.

@gbrl10 that makes me feel so much better thank you, I was really worried that my act score, and on the bright side if anything my transcript can help just a bit since theres such a good upward trend.

It is good to know that the PHI courses will help a bit. It sucks that the wait is so long though since I won’t get a decision till April haha.

Overall, thanks a bunch for replying it makes me feel much better and less anxious.

@humblepot No problem, I’m glad I could make you feel better. And lol, I understand. Even after speaking to an admission officer last school year, I was so scared NC State wouldn’t accept me even though I had everything she said I needed.

And yeah, according to your semester-by-semester plan (https://oucc.dasa.ncsu.edu/chass-16philba-16phillaw-2147/) you don’t even have any PHI until sophomore year, so having two freshman year is quite good.

Anyway, I hope you get in. Tell me your decision in April!

@gbrl10 is a 3.5 still alright? I still haven’t gotten my gpa but all these finals are making me prepare for the worse lol

@humblepot XD. Lol, yes. If it’s any consolation, humanities majors acceptance rates for transfer students last year was 57% (versus the overall acceptance rate of 34%), and a 3.5 is still above last year’s average of 3.42. So you’re good, lol.

@gbrl10 At UNCW they cap us off at 18 credit hours and I had 16 but I was able to find a physical education course worth 2 credits! It also transfers to NC State so I will have 30 transferrable credit hours! So I am assuming this means they will not ask for my high school stuff.

One question though, I was looking at the transfer catalog and the course I am taking here is PED101, it says that it transfers as PE101 and PE2** but do those count for anything at state? Like I try to click on the course description but it does not work.

@humblepot
That’s great! PE 101 and PE 2** don’t really count for anything useful. PE used to be courses regularly offered, but now they’re out of circulation. They still count though, so even though it’s useless, it’s good that it will get you to that 30 credit mark.

@gbrl10 Finished with a 3.74!! :slight_smile:

@humblepot Fantastic!
