hey, so i applied as a transfer for fall 2018 but i was deferred and then denied. I want to apply for spring 2019 but I am so discouraged. My second semester of freshman year really brought down my gpa.
I am about to be a sophomore and am a psych major. I ended freshman year with a 2.97 gpa (first semester I got a 3.15, second semester i got a 2.8).
Here are the courses I have taken:
College Writing 1 & 2 (got an A+ and an A)
Pre-Calc 1 ©
Intro to Psych
BioPsych
Clinical Psych
Sociology 222
20th Century History
Biology 111 and Lab
Chem 111 and Lab
I am taking Pre-Calc 2 over the summer
This fall I am set to take these classes at my current institution
Chem 114 and Lab
Bio 112 and Lab
Social Psych
MST (film)
I really don’t know if I have a shot. If i make an A in my summer class it will raise my GPA to a 3.0
@packlove04
What college do you go to?
To be honest, it might be a stretch. Assuming those two college writing classes transfer as ENG 101 and Pre-calc 1 transfers as an appropriate math course, you’ve met their requirements, so I’m not much worried about that (https://admissions.ncsu.edu/apply/transfers/application-review/). Since GPA is one of the two major things they look at, I would be a little bit concerned where you currently stand. If you do well your fall semester to get your GPA a little above a 3.0, that will help a bit. The average GPA for Fall 2017 was 3.29, and other years have been similar to that. So if you could possibly get your GPA up to 3.1, I would say that your chance would be okay.
If you do well in Social Psychology, that might overshadow your GPA since they know that you will do well in your core classes, and your GPA is only low due to non-humanities related classes.
thank you for the reply!! so applying for spring is a long shot? i mean will they see my fall grades? I am taking pre-calc 2 over the summer and hope to do really well to raise my gpa too.
do you think applying for biology better my chances instead?
would*^
@packlove04 If you get your GPA to 3.0 as you predicted for the summer, I suppose it’s worth a shot. They won’t see your Fall grades, but I think they’ll see that you’re currently taking those classes. Also, did you check if your English and pre-calc classes directly transfer to State?
yeah all my classes transfer
@packlove04 Oh, no no. I think bio is way more competitive than psych. Also, it requires 1 level of calculus, but you’re still taking pre-calc. I think applying for something in the agriculture college (excluding Animal Science) would be easier since the GPA requirement is lower (2.5 or 2.7 depending on major). I’m assuming your Bio courses transfer has BIO 181 and 183?
Okay, thank you! Yes, both the biology courses transfer over as Bio 181 & 183. Idk, I’m just super nervous and am wondering if it’s even worth it applying again.
@packlove04 Yeah, I would say it’s worth a try. Since the average GPA of accepted students was 3.29, that means that there had to be some accepted people under 3.0 that were in the bottom percentiles.
@gbrl10 where do you find the avg. Gpa accepted, etc for state? I’m waiting for my decision but i feel like they are making me wait as they got my grades on the 14th and I’m applying for animal science
@Nccope
https://data.emas.ncsu.edu/project/transfer-profile/
I also had access to how many get accepted to each college, but I think Agriculture had over 40% acceptance rate versus the total of 32%. Once I’m not busy, I’ll send a picture of the actual file that says that.
@gbrl10 thanks! You’re super knowledgeable about all this stuff, It looked like animal science was a top 10 for transfers so I hope they still have room. I’m just nervous as to why they are taking so long, my grades were sent the same day they posted. It might be because I forgot that I ordered the transcript in feb, and then ordered another transcript so they got it twice… oops. So maybe I pee’d them off by accident
@Nccope
No problem! I don’t think they really care about sending the transcript twice They’ll just take the most recent.
I had the admission profile bookmarked, but they removed the information for some reason, so I only have data from a few years ago, but they’re about the same: http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/archives/admissions/finalasr_fall/adug2015.htm
In that link, the College of Agriculture and Life Science had 422 applications where 183 were accepted. So about a 43% acceptance rate.
@gbrl10
Hey, my name is James and I know this thread is kind of old, but I’ve been searching info about transferring into NC State COE for a long time now, and its awesome to find someone who is so knowledgeable. So I was hoping you could help me answer some questions.
So currently i am in a situation where financially I have to work full time, so i have only been taking 2-3 courses per semester. Right now i have maintained a 4.0 GPA. Once i transfer into NC State(hopefully for computer science) i will drop down to part time at work, and go to school full-time. My question is when i put my transfer applications in will NC State hold my light course load against me in the application process?
Also, I went to school at 2 other community colleges when I was about 18 and 20 and didn’t do so well do not really knowing what I wanted. I’m now 25 and will be when I apply for State. Will State look at my Wake Tech program GPA as important as they look at my cumulative GPA, which will be brought down because of my old school grades, or will that ruin my chances at NC State? The classes from 5 to 7 years ago that are bringing my GPA down are English 111, Psychology,
Physical Education, and Art appreciation. Im very focused now and I’ve taken and maintained all A’s in English 112, Calc(1,2,3), Physics 1, Chemistry, and all the other electives, and I will probably end up with a B in physics 2. With everything added up my cumulative GPA will be around a 3.6 when applying.
Sorry for the wall of text, thanks so much though.
@wanabengineer
Sorry for not answering this earlier, I hope it’s not too late to give advice. When the transfer coordinator was answering questions a couple of years ago, one of the applicants asked would it be okay if he just took 1-2 classes at a time, and if that would affect their decision. She said yes, it’s fine, and it wouldn’t affect their decision. There is a handful of people who go to NC State that already have full “professional” jobs, but the job requires a degree to get a raise, so they take a class or two each semester. Honestly, as long as they are getting money, I don’t think they care how long you attend the school. And if you don’t go over the credit limit (over 140 for a four-year degree), you should be fine.
For your other question, believe it or not, someone had an almost identical question for the coordinator. She said admission officers usually understand those situations, and if you wanted to, you could write a short essay that basically said, “I was young and dumb” (really, the coordinator said that) and it would be okay. Even if you don’t, the team knows that you make mistakes when you’re younger, and you have now shown that you are capable of doing the work with your current GPA and work ethic. Moreover, the courses that are bringing you down are not important for COE applicants, so no worries!
I hope I wasn’t too late, and good luck!
Also, just in case anyone still references this thread for some reason, @Nccope and @HazelPrine got in, and @packlove04 did not

Hi gbrl110, I will be appreciate if you have time to ask my question, I was preparing to transfer no state now and my current gpa is 3.63 with complete cal1 2 and phy 1 and chem 1 … with total 45 credits, I would take cal3 and linear algebra this spring, do you think I would have chance to get in to? I’m computer Science major.
Thanks!
