North Carolina State University vs. University of North Carolina at Wilmington?

This is a two part question for those who are willing to answer it. I tried to get chanced on the chance forums but there was no response in what I think was no one knew how to respond for it. Hopefully, I have a better chance with people who may know both schools better.

I am a current student at Wake Technical Community College in Raleigh with my Associate's in Arts degree with plans to graduate this December and plan to major in Business with a concentration in Finance.

Stats and ECs.

-GPA: 3.875 as of Fall 2010 semester.
-Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Member
-Wake Technical Community College Honors Program Member
-Dean's List (Fall 2010)
-Various volunteer hours

What are my chances?

Both schools definitely have a strong appeal for me, but I wanted to hear any pros and cons that people who are familiar with the school can make. Legitimate claims, rather than shaky opinions would be definitely appreciated. It's been a hard decision and anyone who could help will greatly decrease the stress of switching classes to meet the requirements of the different universities.

I appreciate any and all help!

Thank you!

I don’t know much about transfer students, but I would say you have a pretty good chance. Send in a good personal statement and try to get good recommendations just to make sure though.

I found this information on their waitlist page, but it sounds like there’s an incentive for Wake students.

“We [NC State] have close ties with the NC Community Colleges system and participate fully in the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. We have special agreement with Wake Technical Community College called Partnership for Access to College (PAC). This guarantees admission to NC State for PAC students who follow the guidelines of the agreement.”

I would definitely do a little research or visit your college advisor and find out what those guidelines entail.

Good luck!

Chris, are you officially in the PAC program ? Its a great program for students & if you “follow the rules” you are guaranteed a spot at State ! Specific required GPA’s for specfic schools/majors are somewhere on the ncsu website. 3.875 sounds like more than enough !

Also, UNCW is a popular school right now. they’ve got a road (I 40 ) and a beach ! Their freshman class is half the size of NCSU… that’s important to keep in mind when people start discussing “how hard it is” to get in UNCW.

When I was in high school (early 80’s) UNCW didn’t even require SAT’s ! They were appreciated but not required. Also, they only wanted a 2.0 GPA. Their graduation rates were shall I say… not too good… but yes, times have a changed !

Sounds like you have credentials for both schools - check them both out (more than once) - you’ll know the best fit !

UNCW’s freshman class is definitely not half the size of NCSU.
Regardless, NCSU is hands-down the better choice.

You have a 3.875. You are what we call a shoo in. Actually youre a shoe-shoo in.

Really I would bet a grand you will get in both.

Regarding UNCW’s freshman class being half the size of NCSU’s freshman class… from their respective websites…

FROM the UNCW Website :

On average, the UNCW Office of Admission receives nearly 11,000 applications for 1,950 first-year spaces in the fall.

FROM THE NCSU Website : 3/28/2011

The competition for a spot in the freshman class was more intense than ever. For the sixth year in a row we have received another record number of freshman applications. Over 19,000 have applied (19,473) for freshman admission for Fall 2011, which is about 3% higher than last year and 42% higher than 2005.

We expect to be able to enroll 4,400 freshmen in the class of 2015, which is 150 fewer freshmen than last year. We are planning on this slightly smaller class to help balance the University’s total undergraduate enrollment with our capacity to provide high quality education to our students. Unfortunately we are not able to offer admission to all of the well-qualified students who apply to NC State because there is just not enough space available in the freshman class

Thanks a lot for everyone’s responses! They were helpful and informative!
@AbdulCCnNC - I’m actually up to a 3.912 after this past spring semester so hopefully that gives me even more of a push to get into the college I decide on.

I have to agree with Kat regarding NCSU as the hands-down better choice.

3.912… You don’t need to worry about getting into a college in the UNC system. If you weren’t considering Chapel Hill because you thought it would be hard to get into, I think you would have a great chance (if CH interests you).

That being said…comparing UNC-W and NCSU is hard because they are two very different environments. State is very, very large. Neither school is amazing in humanities, both are good in science, NC State has the major edge in engineering and somewhat of an edge in business (I think, might be wrong though). If you wanted the “college experience” I think you would have a better chance at UNC-W, because I feel like it’s be going to be hard to meet lots of new people if you come in as a transfer to NCSU (plus you probably know a lot of people in the area anyway). What I guess I’m trying to say is UNC-W: totally new experience, new people. NCSU: a continuation of your current life.

Academically, I think if you can keep up that 3.912 then it might be wise to go to NCSU because it will be considered more substancial for grad school applications, if that’s what you’re looking at after undergrad.

@JohnM1292 - It’s funny that you mentioned that. Chapel Hill was originally my school of choice but after visiting the forums and seeing such sad stories of people not getting in, or waitlisted and then denied, it brought my confidence down significantly on whether I had a chance to get in. However, on Friday (5/27/11), I visited UNC-CH for the first time with friends to get a student perspective on what it’s like and absolutely fell in love with the school and it is now my first choice.

I thank everyone for their input on this thread because it has helped immensely and made me realize that I want a school where I am in a different area than the one I’m in now. Change is a good thing and now my priorities are UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Wilmington!

Unless anyone has any input on getting into Chapel Hill, I think this thread should be closed. If anyone has any suggestions on what I should be doing, please don’t be afraid to send me a PM!

I’m going to be followng your journey. I am an incoming Freshman into Wake Tech, and plan on transferring to UNC-CH. Looks like we are in the same boat.
