Northeastern Rank 2016

There are so many rankings. Always look at the methodology. But any ranking that puts Northeastern ahead of BU is valid in my book LOL!

@TomrSrofBoston just curious, why do you have such a animosity toward just BU? i always see you bashing BU, n the northeastern forum but yet you continue to post advice on the BU forum?

@llegeAcceptanc I am an alumnus of both schools. NU undergrad way back, BU MET master’s degree recently. BU has long considered itself so vastly superior to NU. Some BU people still do despite the stats and rankings contradicting this. It is amusing to see the tables turned in the past decade.

It is no different than BU/BC, IU/Purdue, Harvard/Yale rivalries.

I’m curious, as we just visited. The tp 25% of applicants begins with ACT 33. Ok, noted. But what about enrolled students? Since the bulk of admitted students choose “elsewhere” I wonder what admitted stats are? It matters for scholarships and honors, as when they say the “top x %”, they must mean of enrolled students?

@HRSMom The stats in post #16 are for enrolling freshman as of 8/1/2015. Most of the “melt” has already occurred: those students who were admitted but chose to go elsewhere. The final stats for enrolled freshman will be published in early October.

For ADMITTED freshmen 4/1/2015:
SAT 2070-2230
ACT 31-34
WGPA 3.9-4.3

For ENROLLING freshmen 8/1/2015:
2020-2200
ACT 31-34
WGPA 3.8-4.3

How much lower would NEU’s test scores be if they didn’t exclude the 17% of international applicants (who don’t submit test scores) and all the low stat admits they hide into enrolling in the spring. It’s not the commuter school it was and it is not the elite school you want it to become. It’s a solid option for kids who want to do co-op. Props to a school who knows its niche. Shame on a school who games the usnews, and it shows in the other rankings…

@clarinetdad16 You seem to be following Northeastern so that you can provide your caveats. Duly noted.

Thanks @TomSrOfBoston

Much appreciated. That is very impressive then!

@TomSrOfBoston - personally I find it ridiculous that schools make it their mission to game the U.S. News Ranking. It can be done and Northeastern is one clear example. Many articles have been written and many have weighed in with their opinions. Once a student enrolls it doesn’t impact the quality of their education or their outcomes, Which one should place emphasis on when they choose a college.

But all the schools are doing it, so to NOT doing it would be hard to defend. How else will they increase their endowment? The higher they climb, the bigger the donation pool. It is a reality…a vicious cycle, but reality.

@Clarinetdad16 The only “gaming” that Northeastern did was to get USNWR to use the 6 year graduation metric rather than the 4 year metric. BTW the 500 or so students in the NUIn program score about 50/2400 points lower than Fall admits. Northeastern no longer accepts direct applications for Spring admission.

The elite schools will always be the self perpetuating top 20 universities and top 10 LAC’s. It is an example of the rich getting richer that is decried so much lately in politics and the media, often using spokespeople from the elite universities.

@Clarinetdad16 Yes, we have all read that.

@TomSrOfBoston so do students get a better education at NEU now vs. then because more classes have 19 students, because they built more dorms, recruited tons of international students and told them no test scores, pushed low scorers into spring admits, schmoozed college presidents to throw them a good review (but in return snubbed them back), and on and on?

@clarinetdad16 I argue that they do.

One advantage of most private colleges over their public brethren is smaller class size which increases the potential for faculty/student interaction.

Since Northeastern does not have strong name recognition overseas, yet, they need to attract good international students whose test scores would not get them into the true elites. These international students add tremendously to the campus vibe. When I was a student at Northeastern 40 years ago I knew one international student. He was a Québécois on the hockey team.

NUIn admits come to campus in January having lived and studied overseas for four months, an enriching experience that their (slightly) higher statted Fall admits did not have.

A residential campus also provides a sense of community and an experience that a commuter school cannot provide.

BTW even back in my day I only had one class at Northeastern with more than 40 students.

@TomSrOfBoston did they teach you how to evade answering questions?

The question is how is NEU better than it was by doing all the things outlined to fame US News…

@clarinetdad16. I thought I just did.

They decreased class size, increased diversity. And more housing is always helpful in city schools. These are legitimate things. It’s not like they hid 10 kids in every class size, or counted empty barns as housing.
