Northeastern University Transfer Thread Fall 2017

I got in!!! I was accepted to the College of Sciences!!! They sent me an email Friday, May 5th at 5:01PM!!

I went to community college and ended up with a 3.3 GPA but most of my courses were very advanced Biology and intense labs. I think that they really looked into both my personal and academic achievements than just my overall GPA! I think my essay also helped me the most to get into NU!!! Good lucks to everyone waiting for admission decision!!!

@MCB0710 I am waiting for my decision for the same college and major! :slight_smile: can I ask for your stats?

@m05933 would you mind sharing your high school gpa and how many credits you had?

is BU a far better university than NEU ??? or is it kindof the same

@Ftrewrbewr BU and Northeastern are peers, though BU would have been a good tier above 20 years ago, so you’ll find some places still catching up on that. They have different departmental strength as well. In liberal arts, BU is usually a stronger school, while Northeastern is very strong in STEM areas. Both have very good business programs.

So basically Northeastern is a bit better for engineering?

What’s the transfer acceptance rate???

Ever so slightly in my opinion. I would focus on other factors before that though - campus, co-op, environment - despite their similarities, BU and NEU have a decent number of differences.

@koreanincali tbh I really thought I was going to be rejected because my GPA was not the perfect GPA. My high school GPA was 3.6 weighted. I was a member of the National Society and did a lot of community service within the Honors program. In community college, I was a member of the phi theta kappa international honors program. I completed an Associate degree in science degree, so that was about over 60 college credits… But they really looked at my essay(it was very personal and had a powerful story about my reasoning for transferring). Good luck to you! I hope you get accepted too!!!

@PengsPhils what are the advantages to attending NEU as a bio major? I know they have a health science school (where I applied to) but are they a good school for pre-med path students?

@Ftewrbewr 39% last year.

Do they reject people with each wave, or do they only reject people in the last wave?

No one has metioned this in previous waves or years but I’m pretty sure they wait. They want to be able to accept as many as possible so by waiting to reject they are able to send out acceptances to the “maybes”

@TinaEng Ouch :frowning: I hope we hear back soon then…I applied to the Bouve college of health sciences >.< has anyone who applied there gotten accepted?
Also, is anyone predicting another wave this friday? Or are we thinking next friday? :frowning:

@PixelTomato The co-op opportunities and connections with the medical hub in Boston would be the real differentiator if you’re looking for it. You can do pre-med easily anywhere - it’s just a set of prerequisites, and good science departments cover that, which Northeastern does.

@PengsPhils yes! I really want to get into northeastern because of their co-op program. Are there a wide selections of medical facilities/hospitals etc to work at? I know that the co-op program isn’t restricted to Boston, but is there a wide variety in terms of what states we can go to? Or is the majority of co-ops taking place in Massachusetts? Is there a pre-med co-op specifically or do we just pick a co-op relating to our major? Sorry for all the questions by the way. I know that me asking all of this is rather silly since I’m not even accepted yet but, I’m really interested in this! Thanks in advance for your response (:

@PixelTomato

No problem!

You can do any co-op, but obviously, you’re limited by your major and skill set - a co-op at a hospital doing medical work won’t be interested in English majors unless they can prove they have the skillset for the job. So in the end, you’ll be picking from co-ops in your major more or less, but it’s not a hard and fast rule.

A good deal are in Boston but there are plenty not in Boston. So much so that NEU has leased housing in NYC, SF, DC, and Chicago specifically for co-op students. For medical co-ops, likely a majority will be in Boston. I haven’t looked explicitly - going off what I know of friend’s co-ops. I know multiple currently working in Boston hospitals, though I don’t know if its a main few or a wide variety.

Is Northeastern sending physical acceptance packages in the mail?

Also in regards to the co-op program, so does it count as academic credits? Do you have to attend an extra semester of college?

@Dontskipthemoose Coop does not award academic credit. You do not pay tuition while on coop. How long you stay at Northeastern depends on how many credits transfer in and how many coops you do.

@TomSrOfBoston if I am transferring as a junior and assuming all my credits transfer, I will need to complete four semesters at Northeastern correct? If I do a co-op for one semester, I won’t be graduating in 2 years but rather 2.5?
