Both have sent me similar financial aid in terms of Northeastern a bit more, but with their higher costs, they even out with what it would cost to attend Pitt.

I'm going to double major in Communications (possibly Journalism) as well as finance.

I'm from NY. Similar distance to each, Pitt is about a 7 hour drive, Boston is about 5-6 with a ferry ride included.

Pitt has a dual degree major thing where it becomes easier to major in something such as communications and get a general business degree as well.

Northeastern obviously has co-op.

I love hockey the most, but like all sports for the most part.

Pittsburgh vs Boston? I've been to Boston a few more times, like the vibe.

Study abroad wise, both have programs available in the Czech Republic I would take advantage of.

Which would you/should I choose?

I've mostly narrowed it down with these two. Still considering Denver U, BU, Maine though.

I'll be visiting Pittsburgh the weekend of Apr 13-14, and Northeastern Apr 27-28 in hopes of deciding.

Northeastern has a completely different feel from Pitt. Northeastern’s emphasis is on their co-op system, and preparation for a job post bachelor degree. If you are planning on seeking an advanced degree, I would not recommend Northeastern.

Pitt has the most extensive list of study abroad programs of any similar school that my children investigated.

I think after you visit these two schools it will become clear to you which one you should attend, because they are so different. It all depends on what you want.

Northeastern is the better school and will typically give you better career options after graduation. Pitt is a decent school too, but I’m not sure I would want to live in Pittsburgh. You should visit each campus to get a feel.

Note - if you love hockey, you would probably like any of the Hockey East schools. It is the premier hockey program in the country.

As far as which university is “better”, you can look across the rankings for a more neutral point of view…

According to US News, Northeastern is one spot ahead of Pitt (tied for 56 vs tied for 58).

According to Princeton Review, Pitt’s academic rating is 80 while Northeastern’s is 79 (higher is better is this rating).

According to Washington Monthly, Pitt ranks #111 while Northeastern ranks #237.

According to Forbes, Pitt ranks #265 while Northeastern ranks #411.

According to the Center for Measuring University Performance, Pitt ranks tied for #23 while Northeastern ranks somewhere over 80 (as high as the study goes).

According to Times Higher Education World Rankings (THES) Pitt ranks 38th in the US (76 in the World) while Northeastern is tied for 77 in the US (clustered between 201-225 in the World)

According to QS/US News World Rankings, Pitt is ranked 98 in the World while Northeastern is clustered between 451-500.

According to the Academic World Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), Pitt is ranked 39h in the US (58th in the World) while Northeastern is ranked between 110-137 in the US (301-400 in the World)

LOL at using any rankings other than US News. Did you just cite a Center for Measuring University Performance and a bunch of international rankings from China?

But yeah, Penguins games are fun. Rather Bruins though. Can’t beat the big market teams.

Informative, you really should get a different user name as you seem to be a bit “misinformed” about many things whenever I read your posts…

But that aside, both schools are quite similar in “academics,” but quite different in everything else. I suggest the OP go to whichever school fits them better (rather than comparing cities or sports teams).

It’s pretty shallow to rely solely on rankings, but even worse when you rely on only one methodology. And flat out embarrassing when someone makes blanket statements of fact without any knowledge (or even a cursory internet search).

THES and QS are both based out of London; ARWU out of Shanghai. They are the three of the biggest and most respected rankings in the world and carry significantly more weight than US News outside of the States. CMUP is the most respected university comparison in the US within academia.

Absolutely no decision should be made based solely on rankings or anonymous message boards posts, but rather on seeing and visiting the schools and evaluating the information about each school’s comparative programs.

Informative’s post are always misinformed. It’s kind of a game to be on the lookout for them, and luckily someone always comes along to point out the inaccuracy so no one is misled.

Northeastern better for business and it has co-op. Pitt for sciences and its cheaper. I guarantee you that the value of degree from either of those 2 colleges will increase rapidly as each year passes by. They are UP AND COMING Universities.

Pitt is awesome and Pittsburgh is a great city. Everyone I knows who’s attended Pitt is very happy with their choice. I’ve never been to Boston so I can’t help with that part.

Again, instead of trying to determine which school is higher in the rankings, you need to consider how different these two institutions are. Hopefully after your visits you will see which one is the better fit for you. Please come back and tell us which one you chose.
