Northwestern AP Credit(Specifically for Weinberg)

Ok everyone, I am extremely confused about AP credit. From what I understand, you need 12 distribution credits in 4 areas for Weinberg. That makes 48 credits overall. For AP's, correct me if im wrong, they say you can only use those credits for two of the twelve distribution credits in each area. However, what can you use AP credits for when the AP's do not count towards distribution requirements? How many areas can you use AP credit for? Please help and clarify for me, I am extremely confused. If you could explain in general too about the whole process that would be wonderful, thank you all

You are far, far off.

12 distribution credits, 2 in each of 6 areas. You ALSO need 45 TOTAL credits, including APs and all other credits you may get. You also must complete a major, two freshmen seminars, and language proficiency (by test or coursework).

For using APs for distribution credits, you can use 2 total, and no more than one in a given distribution area. E.g. You may get 2 credits for a 5 on AP history, but you can only use one to fulfill a history distribution credit.

Also: [Let me google that for you](<a href=“LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You”>LMGTFY - Let Me Google That For You)

ahhh ok so that means i can only use two AP tests at the most towards distribution requirements? and if the AP’s do not count towards any specific area, or they do not count for distribution credit ie. English Language, then can I still use those AP’s in addition to the first two or not?

Disappointing, I’m sure, that a kid can work his butt off on five or more AP courses and exams during HS, and NU will chuck all but two.

You still get elective credit (i.e. towards the 45 total credits). You just can only use 2 for distribution areas, i.e. NU doesn’t let you completely ditch math just because you took AP calculus and got a 5, or History because you took AP European History. I came in with ~11 AP credits (would’ve been 15 had I been better at physics and studied for Latin), so I tend to think NU is very generous in that regard- had I wanted to graduate a year early it would have been stupendously simple, and I had the freedom to take only 3 classes a quarter, like a friend of mine did every single quarter, whenever I wanted. The concept is merely that NU wants their students to be well rounded (hence distros) and so they want you to actually know certain areas (which are really easy to get around honestly), and the AP’s are in large part not equivalent to their real life class counterparts.

arbiter, I’ve looked online and am a little confused about AP Calc credits for Weinberg. If I got a 5 on the AB test, does that mean I cannot gain anything by doing well on the BC test? That seems odd.

No- you can get one more credit, that for Math 224. I’m not sure how that’s confusing: [<2012-2013>](http://www.weinberg.northwestern.edu/advising/freshmen/credit/apib/2012-2013.html</a>)

There is a new change with Calculus this year. Prior to this coming year if you scored a 5 on the AB exam you received credit for Math 220 and 224 and now you only receive credit for Math 220. If you get a 4 or 5 on the BC exam you can get credit for Math 220 and Math 224.

thank you very much arbiter213 you cleared everything up for me, now i just need to go and study my ass off in the next week I really appreciate the help though i cant wait to come next year

@Kdog044 to clarify I’m pretty sure that the change happens for the people entering next year, September 2012. So people entering this year will still receive credits for Math 220 and 224 for AB 5

@tomyo123, you are correct. I was thinking that was for this year but I am glad that won’t take place until next fall. Thanks for pointing that out.

Wish I knew about how NU handles APs earlier… would not have taken so many. Money saved I guess.

i don’t get why people think northwestern’s ap policies are harsh… unlimited credit, but you still take the distro requirements. seems pretty fair to me.

^ didn’t want to take most of the reqs ; )

I take what I said back… after more research i found im saving $36,000 from APs that cost $672 to take… worth it.
