Northwestern & Case Western. Which school is better?

US News & World Reports ranks Northwestern U higher than Case Western in both Engineering and Biological Sciences. What do you guys think?

I must be seeing things because just 2 days ago, when I clicked on the ranking tab in both Northwestern U and Case Western, I can see the rating for each school’s Engineering program. ie. Case’s Biomedical Engineering was ranked at #15, but now instead of the ranking #, I see a pad lock.

The rankings for the engineering schools are typically at the graduate level. For the undergrads, the overall quality and environment of the school matters more.

@NorthwesternDad , is it true that Northwestern has a party atmosphere?

NU has that “Work Hard, Play Hard” mentality. Actually there is not that much time to party with the quarter system :-)

Is the quarter system that much harder than semester system?

Academically, NU has a much stronger reputation. The quarter system “ramps up” very quickly, so there is no waiting until week 3 to start paying attention. You might have a mid-term by week 4!

This is for @momof3sons @NorthwesternDad and anyone else who might want to add to this discussion.

Say you’re a good student, 4.0+ GPA, but you’re a slow learner. You have to read a chapter 2-3 times before you fully understand it, whereas another kid with the same GPA, 4.0+ only have to read it once and they can answer all the chapter questions with no difficulty.

But you’re a hard worker and and you study long hours, you maintain a 4.0+ GPA since elementary school. And you’re about to graduate high school with Summa Cum Laude distinction. You have 6 Science courses under your belt, and all your core classes are either AP, Honors or Advanced classes. Your senior Math class is AP Calculus AB.

You want to major in Biomedical Engineering.

Now you get to decide between 2 good Universities, one on a quarterly system and the other, semester system:

Which should you choose?

Granted that the semester system gives one more leeway to learn and adjust the work schedules. But if you are a hard worker, the quarter system is not a handicap. It is all a matter of priorities.

Saw this list. I forgot where I got it from but it’s supposed to be recent. Case Western is at #7.
If anyone can confirm this, I would really appreciate it. I know Case Western has a really good BME program, so this might be right.

By posting this question under the NU thread it seems like you already have your mind made up and are perhaps just looking for validation. If you are really considering CWRU you should probably post the question in that thread as well. At any rate, best of luck to your student - it looks like he/she has two really great options to choose from.
