Hello!
I’m an international student from Brazil who just applied ED to Medill. Could you please chance me? I can chance you back if you want me to.
ACT: 32 (33, 35, 29, 31)
SAT2 Spanish: 770
SAT2 Math 1: 680
TOEFL: 102
Class rank: 1/95
GPA: 9.5/10
Counselor rec: 10/10
Teachers rec: 9/10
My EC’s include President of the Student Council (participated in all 4 yrs of High School), co-founder of first school’s newspaper, Captain of school’s volleyball team and Intern at the Federal Court of Brazil. I’ve also been volunteering for AFS Intercultural Programs. I’ve written on my own personal blog since 2010. I also hold a YouTube channel where I talk about academic opportunities and teach English to Portuguese speakers. Earlier this year I was selected by the US Department of State among more than 14,000 students to represent Brazil in the US as a Youth Ambassador with a full-scholarship; and in July I also received a full-scholarship for an one-month language exchange program in Argentina.
I’m currently an EducationUSA Opportunity Funds Scholar in Brazil – a program that helps low-income students to get into American universities. I’m telling you this because they sent an endorsement letter recommending me.
I guess my PS is great and my Why NU is unique.
SAT is a bit low, but your grades are very good, and EC’s pretty decent, although none are related to writing. I would play up the blogging/YT angle, and being an EducationUSA Scholar will help. I think you have a shot. NU also accepts like 30% ED I’ve heard.
Thanks for your opinion! I heard from both my Portuguese/Writing teacher and my Counselor that they made sure to mention on their letters how much discussing academic opportunities on my YT channel has impacted my classmates to also pursue better opportunities. I’ve also written to different online platforms on topics such as Feminism and Education. I was a finalist of an UNICEF’s writing contest this year too. Don’t know if these activities could add that much to my app, though.
Oh, I forgot to say I intend to double major in Journalism and Latina and Latino Studies – I don’t know if it matters.
I think you have a pretty solid chance of getting in! Test scores are a little low, but your rank and GPA are up there. Great extracurriculars and spectacular recognitions(Youth Ambassador and EducationUSA!!), plus you seem like a unique applicant. Best of luck!!
Chance me back??

Thanks for chancing me!
Have you previously heard about Youth Ambassadors? I knew it was very famous world-wide (especially in Latin America), but not in the US itself!
I wish you best of luck too! I’ll definitely chance you.
Your chances are VERY solid, but at that level you can never be too sure. I say this because Northwestern loves ED applicants and you are from Brazil. Your scores are average maybe a tiny bit below average although they might raise eyebrows at a Spanish SAT instead of another math or science, but you bring something unusual to the table, your EC’s are good, and as long as you took challenging courses you should be fine.
Thank you so much @randomname3141!
What do you mean by “and you are from Brazil”? I know only a few Brazilians that were accepted to NU, and none of them applied ED – which worries me, because I don’t have any parameters to compare myself after all.
Maybe I shouldn’t have taken Spanish, but I tried to make sure that I took it not because Portuguese and Spanish are similar languages (at the end of the day, they’re not) and it’d make it easier for me, but because I do love the language – I’ve taught myself Spanish online, I received a scholarship to learn/keep practicing it in Argentina, etc. Even my PS is about how learning Spanish is related to a heritage my family had to hide. I hope it wasn’t a bad decision.
