Northwestern HPME Part 2

So what are my chances of getting an HPME application.
I have sent in my HPME card request, and I'll apply if i get an application but I won't if i don't get one.

I'm Indian but I lived in Cincinnati, OH from 3rd to 9th grade, and then I moved to Singapore. I am a US citizen.

Here are my stats:
GPA: 4.07/4.00
SAT: 2190 (730 Reading/750Math/710writing)
SAT II: Math level 2 - 800, Biology - 800, Chem (i took in nov, so i'll find out my score this week)
ACT: 33
APS: Junior Year: bio, physics b, eng lang, stats
Senior year: chem, eng lit, us gov, comparative gov, calc ab(in my school after precalc you HAVE to take calc ab; otherwise i would take BC; I think I'll selfstudy for Calc BC)

EC: Math club (VP - mu alpha theta), Medical explorers club (hospital volunteering), girl scouts (i have my gold award from teaching in a village school in india), National honor society, spanish honor society, I am learning German outside of school at the Goethe Institute, dance, Tutor (math, biology, physics, spanish)

I don't have any research though. But I do have hospital volunteering since 10th grade (after I moved to Singapore). One of my essays I talk about why med, mainly cause my younger brother passed away when I was 9 so that's where my passion comes from.

Ok, so what do you think my chances are of HPME? Will I atleast get a application??

I'm also applying to BU's 7year med program and RPI's 7year med program. I'm thinking about Case Western but I don't really benefit in time since it's 8 years. I'm applying to JohnHopkins, georgiatech, u of mich for biomed engineering. MIT is my complete reach school.

Hey everyone. Good to see that so many people are interested in HPME this year! With regards to chancing and all of that, it really is not that important how your grades/scores are. Well, actually, it would be more accurate to say grades/scores aren't the only thing that is important.

From what I know, grades and scores are looked at to judge whether or not an applicant will receive an application. After that, the most important thing is to demonstrate that you are not only passionate about pursuing a career in medicine but also that you have "what it takes" to succeed in med school. With that said, scores and grades will of course be looked at, but what is equally important is a genuine interest in the sciences and motivations other than money or "just wanting to help people." There is a reason why they request on site interviews with applicants - they need to be 100% convinced that you will not only excel at Northwestern but at the medical school as well. They look at HPMEs like an investment - they want to snag future doctors that will boost Feinberg's reputation.

Also, they look favorably upon people who will take full advantage of what HPME has to offer. Being in the program, you have the liberty to explore fields that other premeds cannot. You can take tons of liberal arts courses without having to worry about your GPA (3.2 GPA requirement). In other words, the HPME people want to give students an opportunity to do what they want to do and they want to give that opportunity to people who will use it.

one question,
is this program available for international students or not?

Why have i not received my HPME application yet? I sent my request form in November 21st and have not even received any email or mail regarding it. How long should it take to arrive?

I got an application last week, and I was surprised at how quickly they sent it cause I submitted the request a week before that.
My stats:
SAT I: math(790) reading (760) writing (740)
SATII: math II (800) chemistry (760) U.S. History (750)
ACT: composite 34 Superscored: Math 36, reading 35, english 35, science 35, writing 8
5 APs all 5s except one 4
Asian

i received my app rather quickly too and i don't even have stellar stats(uw gpa-3.7, sat us history <700). i think that since i requested it in like october that helped cause i think they cap the number of apps they send out to 1000, i'm not sure though...

Maybe it's by region or something

if its by region, california has a whole lot of people that probably sent in requests.that's why i thought it was time that you sent in requests...

hmm...it might be that you sent it in too late? i really don't know though. they might cap it, or they might just be taking a while. your stats should be 2150+ AND good GPA.

still have not received it- i am emailing them if i dont get it tomorrow, as it will have been at least 2 and a half weeks by then. I'm pretty sure that my stats are good enough to get an application: 2160 SAT, 34 ACT, 780 math 2 and chemistry, 800 bio M, 690 physics(maybe i shouldnt have taken this one month into course), 3.9 GPA UNweighted and nearly top 10 %, but with the toughest courses i could probably take at school...

I will wait and see for tomorrow...

SoReal: I would call them up if you haven't received an application by now.

The entire HPME operation is pretty small so I don't think they bother to do it by region. If you guys have any questions, please feel free to ask them here or shoot me a message! Hope to see some of you guys at NU for interviews!

so im kind of switching the topic now....sry
but for the essays, can the 3 separate topics be numbered off? or do they want them as one whole essay? how do they want them presented?

thanks =)

i second bhatic24's question. what format are we supposed to use?

What I did was just section each off. Basically a double space between each division in topic. With the 3 topics being so different, it really isnt possible to create an essay that kind of flows through each one (believe me, I tried!! lol). I just sent in everything today!! Big load off. I was suprised, the app was very easy imo. I thought it would be more intensive. Not at all

Stats:
GPA 4.333W/4.0UW
Rank 2/852
NM Commended
AP Scholar with Distinction
Student of the Year in every AP and honors course taken
2220 SAT I, 34 ACT
SAT II: 800 Chem, 800 Math IIC, 650 Span Read

EC:
Philanthropy Exec Officer Stud Govt
NHS
Leadership Committee SciOly
President of NJHS in freshmen year (our freshmen yr was still in middle school lol)
volunteer at hospital (250+hours)
Future Leaders Club
Went to National Conference in DC as a student leader (NYLC)
National Science Achievement Academy
Conducted research involving DNA sequencing of bacteria at Hiram College (2 week session)
Tae-kwon-do (2nd degree black belt)

The essays are supposed to be less than two pages, but then, it's not two pages double spaced, is it? it is two pages single spaced, right?

^mk, i think that's right... or at least i hope it is.

single spaced, minimum 11 font should be used. that's protocol with most college essays. i now high schools always teach students like us to type double spaced, but this is for eng class where papers need to be corrected, so they use the extra space to write in corrections and such. single space is for more formal essays, like those of college adm. and btw, u guys should prob send urs in soon, they need to be postmarked by Jan 1 and i kno the post office is closed during the holidays.

If I am going to shadow a physician (like January or early February), am I allowed to include that in my resume, even if I haven't done it yet?

Hi,
I have a quick question about the application instructions for anyone who is applying or anyone who can answer. Under #8, there is a mention of a "Personal History Essay." Is this referring to the three essay questions in the application, or am I missing a part of the application?

Thank you!

Regarding format, I think whatever suits you best is fine. Format will only hurt you if it is hard to understand.

Regarding future events, don't write them down as if you've done them. Play it safe. (Especially since HPME interviews are as early as January. You don't want to be asked about shadowing if you haven't done it)
