Northwestern HPME Part 2

lowriders715: Sent my stuff in Dec. 16, haven't gotten back anything. Don't worry.

did anybody else can an interview email yesterday? I sent mine on december 25th...

Also, does any one have any advice for the interviews? I've interviewd for colleges before, but never for a medical school program....Scared...

Agreed. HPME isn't about partying and taking it easy (although some people do treat it like that....)

Hey I actually got an interview confirmation, wasn't expecting to get one at all. I was surprised when I got the e-mail actually, but am now excited. Does anyone know for sure how many people get interviews and how many get accepted?
and how should I prepare, like what kind of questions should I be prepared to see? I'm having mine on Feb 6, so anything you guys know would help.
I wish the rest of ya'll the best of luck

ahh i'm still anxiously waiting. i want an interview badlyyy

I'm waiting for my interview like crazy too!!! does anyone know if HPME sends out like rejection emails if they dont ask you for an interview?

I'm waiting... freaking out, too..
According to the posts from last year, HPME does send out rejection letters.

I think they send out the all the rejection letters together at the end.. like around late February or early March. Scary.

Is it fair to assume that if someone gets an HPME interview, that they are pretty much accepted into NU undergrad?

^In most cases but not necessarily. A while back, a CC member said he was interviewed but was rejected by both the HPME and the regular admission.

my guess is that there probably is no contact between hpme and regular admission (until they're accepted). but generally the people who get interviews are good enough for regular admission

I got the interview email!!! :))
Good luck you guys. i'm sure you'll all get it soon enough.

oh my. i'm so scared now. i hope they're still sending out many interview requests.

anyone interviewing on the Feb 6th? maybe i'll c u there

It really isn't that dissimilar from the interviews that normal undergraduate programs conduct. You go to the Feinberg (medical school) campus downtown, interview with Dr. Green (director of the program), have an interview with an HPME student currently in medical school, he/she gives you a tour of the Chicago campus, and finally there's an interview with one of the medical school faculty.

HPME is looking for smart, well-rounded kids who are (and will remain) dedicated to the idea of becoming a doctor and have good reasons for such. Since you already got an interview, that gets the first part out of the way, so the main focus of the interview questions will be to try to ascertain how you know you want to be a doctor at this point and what you're going to bring personally to the program. Be prepared to talk about what you find attractive about medicine and why specifically and in detail, and how this relates to you as a person and fits with your other life goals and interests. It might be good to give some thought to how you might answer the inevitable variant of the "why do you want to be a doctor?" question (although if you're applying to HPME you should already know that), but I think overpreparing is a real danger as well. One of the best things you can do is relax and let them see that you are a real person with unique interests and a genuine conviction that medicine is what you want to do with your life.

As a note, I am currently an HPME student in my third undergrad year (out of four; I'm foregoing the accelerated part of the program because I see absolutely no reason to hurry and get out of college), so if anyone has any questions about the application/interview process or what the program is like once you're there, feel free to ask away (I don't check this forum regularly, so the best way to get an answer in a timely manner is to shoot me a PM).

Also, to the people who have debated whether the purpose of HPME is to be able to take challenging classes without worrying about your GPA or to be able to party and have fun without worrying about your GPA, in my opinion both are valuable and you should think of HPME as removing some of the constraints on what you're able to do to get what you want out of college. Just remember that you're going to be dedicating much of your twenties to getting through medical school and everything that entails, so getting some recreation in now is definitely something to consider.

congrats devnba!

Does anyone know if the 27th was the last round for scheduled interview emails? Is there still at least some hope?

"with regards to interviews, an e-mail from the HPME office read:
"Individual overnights will run from January 19th until March 5th next quarter"
so more are coming

So I was wondering...for those who already received interview invitations, when and what time did you guys get an e-mail? Also, more interviews are def. coming, right??//
im so scared ;(

Got my rejection letter today, dated January 26th.

Eh, it was a longshot anyway.

how bad is it to turn down an interview?
Is there some sort of "waiting list" where someone else will get my interview slot?
Reading all of the raw emotion on this thread makes me feel very guilty as I may have taken away someone else's shot at his/her dream.

I don't know why you applied if you were going to turn down the interview, but no, there is no waiting list, at least according to my letter.
