Though it feels good to read this, NU Cuisine is not known for great food options for vegetarians :-(

Just in 2011, Northwestern was named the top vegan-friendly college in the nation…[The 10 Most Vegan Friendly Colleges](<a href=“HuffPost - Breaking News, U.S. and World News | HuffPost”>The 10 Most Vegan Friendly Colleges | HuffPost College)

Has your child checked out Allison or Hinman?

^it probably just means even the best is still not that good. there’s no “great” dorm food probably; some are just more acceptable than others.

but it’s nice to know that we are actually that good when compared to others.

the best campus food i’ve ever had by far was when i was in hong kong, doing summer research at hong kong university of science and technology.

thanks much for this info, wildcatalum. Will let S know. He lives in the North campus, so I doubt whether he dines out on the south side; since he hasn’t lost weight or anything, I presume his overall happiness at NU must have played a role ;-)

Historically, North Campus=meat-eaters. I don’t know why that is but the dining halls respond by offering mostly meat options up there. It makes sense why he finds few vegetarian options there. It’s definitely a good idea to check out the South Campus dining halls. They’re so vegetarian-friendly that carnivores actually complain about the lack of meat options, particularly in Allison.

That is really good to know!!! Thanks again.

This is really interesting. My son lives in Willard which has a beautifully made-over dining hall, but the food is pretty dreadful. I think he has branched out to other dorms on South campus, but there’s nothing like being able to get from your room to your dorm’s dining hall in 30 seconds.

My son had a serious interest in 5 of the 6! I just brought it up, but he says “No correlation dad - I didn’t know about the food”. Smart $#@!

Well, the rankings were based on an incomplete sample (only top 6 of the USNEWS Top 20).

If you got into a good amount of the Top 20 schools, then it’s likely some of your schools showed up on here.

That said, I got into 4 of the schools on the top 6! And food was one of my secondary selection criteria when choosing which program to attend :P

We were pleasantly surprised to see NU ranked #3…we can attest to WashU being #1 (oldest son, class of '11)…it’s a “slam-dunk” there…but, very happy to see NU high up on this list!

My S has lived in Hinman for 2 years and is a vegetarian. He thinks their food is generally really good. He’s tried a few other dining halls but likes his the best. The vegetarian offerings seem to satisfy him.

Our only data point is that D will live off campus next year but still wants a meal plan. Knowing how much she loves to eat out, NU dorm food must not be TOO bad. ;-D
