So, bluntly, any vegans at northwestern? I had a few questions (even if your not vegan (which your probably not)). First, is there some sort of meal plan? Is there any options for someone who doesnt eat meat, milk, eggs, etc.? Most importantly is there a whole foods in evanston or another health food store?

^I found out there are 2 whole foods near by (google) but does anyone know if they are close to NU…

There are two Whole Foods within easy walking distance of some of the dorms. My dad and I went into one when we were there. (I’m a vegetarian and a really health-conscious person.) And meal plans don’t dictate what exactly you eat, just where, how much and (to some degree) when.

There is a Whole Foods in downtown Evanston and it is a short walk from south campus. I’m not familiar with the meal plans (you should look on the NU website - dining services options are on there), but I remember reading this recently in the Daily Northwestern:

perfect!!!

There is definitely vegan and vegetarian options in many of the meal plans. If you look at the dorm menus, there are little icons identifying these kinds of foods. I wondered this too. I hate meat!!!

haha i’m glad there are others! But i know (now) that every student is required to have the meal plan. Sooo does the meal plan actually have a lot of vegan options or am I going to have to be paying the same as everyone but get one tenth of the quality?

oh trust me…you won’t be missing out on vegan options…

look under small u.s. schools

If you are vegan, strongly consider living in South Campus, Allison specifically. I lived there one year and Whole Foods is literally 2 blocks away and there’s always vegan/vegetarian options in the dining hall. You can also consult the dietician if you have special requirements and they will make sure to accommodate you. The intercampus shuttle stops at the other Whole Foods location also if you’re in that area for some reason (across from it is Jewel-Osco). Also in that area also is Blind Faith Cafe, which is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant that my vegetarian/vegan friends love. NU and Evanston are vegetarian/vegan-friendly and you will be in good company.

Vegan/vegetarian is easy; low-fat, now that’s a whole other story!

There’s lots of vegetarian/vegan stuff. As other posters have pointed out, NU has won multiple awards for being vegetarian- and vegan-friendly. In fact, I’ve heard non-vegetarian students complain that there’s so much vegetarian/vegan stuff that there’s not enough “normal” food.

And yes, there is a Whole Foods pretty close to South campus.

Live SOUTH!
Living up north while being a vegan, you might as well starve to death.

Great info! Sooo if I got lucky enough to get the dorms I’d want, I should choose 1835 Hinman or Allison or someting? They have good vegan food I heard…
