Hey guys, im from Texas and have been accepted to both schools. If i go to NU i will major BME and if i go to UT it will be ChemE. Ultimately i want to go to med school. I plan on keeping my gpa up and doing well on the mcat etc etc. I really like UT however i dont want to get stuck in Texas. this seems to happen to a lot of ppl who go there, Northwestern is a great school but some things about UT are holding me back from picking it.

What do you guys think. Is it hard to get into a top 25 (out of texas) med school from UT as compared to NU? Remember grades and mcat are a nonissue.

Med school is expensive and you need to plan for that. So go to the less expensive one. If the cost is somehow similar, then NU hands down. The engineering curriculum is awesome with the “Engineering First” at NU; with 1-yr of physiology from the BME, you’ll find med school physiology a breeze. ;)

as of now, NU is 8g more a year. i think it might come down to the visit. what do you do in this “Engineering First”

It lets you experience real engineering right away whereas in most other schools, students don’t get that exposure until the second semester of sophomore year or junior year. As far as I know, the only school that has similar curriculum to NU’s is Olin.
Here are sample course syllabus and materials for the first course (I quickly skimmed through some of the case studies and they looked fun):

As an engineer myself that wasn’t lucky enough to take this tract (they started it right after I finished my freshmen), I can tell you the Engineering Analysis sequence is pedagogically much more superior than taking 5 separate courses in engineering mechanics, phyiscs, linear algebra, differential eqn, computer programming.

The Design and Communication adds another awesome dimension to the curriculum.
