Northwestern over......

the lax or business school incident didn't effect my decision, but a drop of like 1% in apps isn't a big deal. I think it probably will effect the yield. Duke is still a great school and definately a peer institution to Northwestern.

(A few years ago,) NU over:

-Georgetown
-Johns Hopkins
-Penn
-Columbia

For those who had chosen NU over Duke, pls read the following article.

<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...8lo&refer=home%5B/url%5D%5B/quote%5D">http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...8lo&refer=home

yep i just posted this in the college search and selection forum

i wonder what this means across the board for other schools policies, etc.

it would take a LOT for northwestern to ever beat out duke in the rankings. duke offers its student body so much more in terms of undergrad experience.
a 1% decline in apps is nothing....yale had around a 9% drop. the bloomberg article uses propaganda almost as radical as that used by the rolling stone article. it failed to quote any duke administrators and stated facts incorrectly. for example, frats are not being disintegrated as the article tries to infer. it misrepresents facts and is written with a complete bias.
northwestern is a great school, dont get me wrong. anyone would be lucky to go there with all of its opportunities. but duke will almost always beat out northwestern when it comes to choosing between schools (and it's not just on CC). i dont think it has all that mch to do with "fit" either. Duke is just a slight notch above nu as an institution

^^ figures coming from a duke student, but no one tried to slight your school...

i agree i don't think it's very realistic that northwestern will pass duke in the rankings, but no one ever made that claim, either

and it does have a lot to do with fit. duke is in the middle of nowhere. northwestern is near a national metropolis.

Duke's reputation is tarnishing nationally. After the lax scandal and the business school incident, people don't have the same image of Duke as they once used to. If they keep up with these incidents then Northwestern could definately pass Duke. I don't think its an impossible feat.

NU over:
U Michigan
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell

Rejected:
Columbia
MIT
Stanford

(NU is actually my top choice other than Stanford)

im sorry, but duke is not "in the middle of nowhere." durham-raleigh-chapel hill is far from rural, and students at duke are always busy with plenty to do in the surrounding areas off campus.
lets not forget that while evanston is certainly a great city, it also isnt chicago. i know a lot about evanston and have been there several times visiting friends. its about 40 minutes away by train to get to the loop.
i would not consider evanston much better than the triangle area.

let's also not forget that while evanston isn't chicago, neither is the loop. Unless you are a student who likes to take weekend trips to the merch.

lincoln park, the belmont and clark area, wrigleyville, are hardly a 20 minute el ride away.

there's also something to be said about the culture residue from being located in the affluent quasi-suburbs next to one of the biggest cities in the country, and being in a rural southern university town.

also, i should add, the chicago border is four miles from northwestern, you could WALK to chicago if you wanted.

haha yeah im sure people walk from nu to chicago alllll the time. hah.
my friend who lives on lake street needs a car just to get to nu's campus

40 mins isnt that far to one of the best cities in the world and the loop is the middle of chicago. duke's great; northwestern's great. idk who's better and idk why ppl even care. the difference, if there is one, is so negligible. to be fair, it seems NU students go out of their way to make Duke and NU on the same platform, while duke students go out of their way to shoot that down. just relax everyone. it doesnt really matter. atleast i dont think so.

Evanston is also 12 miles away from downtown Chicago, and when I visited, it took me 40 min to get to Northwestern from O'Hare Airport by taxi.

no duke students definitely think of nu as a great school. i was just responding to people's various statements about duke's tarnishing image and about it being a rural town. i never said anything negative toward nu, more just asserting that duke might not what some of you are assuming it is. though the experiences at each school will surely be different, im sure one could adjust to either environment and love it all the same.

let's get this thread back to what it's supposed to be:

NU over.....

ahahah. That is funny Sam. I concur nonetheless. From my cursory observations, it seems that NU will be enrolling a very talented student body this year judging by the posts here. Some very impressive schools were turned down !

NU Over:

-->DUKE<-- :-P
UW-Madison

NU over:

Duke
jhu
umich honors
cmu
ucla, ucb

interpol32: "no duke students definitely think of nu as a great school."

really? wow that's something i didn't know. if what you say is true i'm guessing duke students are almost jingoistic and paranoid about their school's prestige. honestly i think duke and nu are pretty much of the same caliber in terms of academics. it's really a matter of what you intend to major what kind of campus you like and the type of location you prefer. UNLESS of course you're obsessed with us news rankings and would do anything to go to a school that's at least a few places higher than your other choice. i personally love NU's campus, its proximity to Chicago and its world renowned econ dept with the recently developed Kellogg certificate program which also seems solid. that's enough reason for me to think NU's a great school.

gd016. Did you get into Duke or did you land a waitlist offer? I am just curious why all of a sudden there are so many NU over Duke this year.

i think you read that wrong...i meant to put a comma after the "no". as in a rebuttal: "no, duke students DO definitely...."
chillout....i was saying nu is a great school. lets not get all defensive.

and you might be perceiving it as more nu over duke this year, but you are on the nu board. you would get a much different impression on the duke board. no one can actually tell which school received more matriculations
