Northwestern Thread for Transfer Students

as far as I understand, everything that's open to your class is open to you as a transfer. Slim chances, maybe, but I'm pretty sure. I just sent an email to the housing advisor who emailed us about housing options, so I guess we'll see.

I got all the credits I could have asked for, and they said they would count my APs as soon as they processed those too. The dean was really great about it. They don't actually register transfers until mid-August, but no one can register classes until then, so the classes you set now are pretty much sealed, or at least that's what he said.

Drop me a PM if there's anything I can help out with. I don't know much, but I'm on campus for the week and I'm trying to figure out as much as possible. Currently I'm taking a photo tour of the dorms, heh. Nothing if not thorough...

Sorry to post again, but this is really useful, even if it is a few years old: <a href="http://asg.northwestern.edu/services/dtecs/browse.php%5B/url%5D">http://asg.northwestern.edu/services/dtecs/browse.php</a></p>

I'm going to Emory next year.. I know that Emory and Northwestern are of the same caliber. Would any of you bother applying to Northwestern?

oh..and can I apply after next year? or do I have to wait till one full year is completed. Because by May 1, my second semester will not be finished.

yea u can apply after one year.

and ya, i'm thinking about doing the transfer house too, as well as any other small upperclass house (and then possibly kemper or the plex).

You can apply before you finish your first year at your current school. If May 1 is the listed deadline, all that means is you should have everything sent to them except the final grades of spring semster by that date. My guess is they will perform preliminary evaluation but won't make the decision until they see those final grades.

are these buildings listed the only ones that will be on the housing application? That's what it says on the site, but many people seem to be listing other buildings are options.

<a href="http://www.northwestern.edu/housing/transfer_index.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.northwestern.edu/housing/transfer_index.html</a></p>

Also, can anyone access the transfer housing application online?

no i dont think the app's available yet. and i think u can request any, but the ones they listed on that site are the ones that are upperclassmen only.

oh and truegibberish, i would really appreciate it if you sent me some o the dorm pics you've been taking. if that's too much of a hassle, mb just your opinions on the dorms you've visited.

yeah, don't know why the app's not up yet. hmm just met with an academic advisor today who said that any res coll, in terms of social involvement is better than a dorm. What do you think? I should have guessed Chapin and Shepard wouldn't be available. And I would love to send you the pics if I weren't a complete idiot and taking pics on an actual throw away... heh. I'll be developing them asap and try and get a CD of them, but I can't promise the lack of advanced technology here will delay the process.

I have to say, personally, 1865 Orrington was beautiful. It's a renovated sorority house (okay so I'm not really a fan of being in the middle of a bunch of frats like kemper, lindgren and 2251, not to mention a bit of a walk for WCAS), and it just looks really well taken care of and like a cute house. It has a piano.

Foster-Walker looks very standard-issue, very straight-edged and conformist. It could be nice on the inside and probably is, and looks like it has something of a suite set up (?) but it's a weird sort of design. Oh, and both Foster-Walker and Orrington are on the wrong side of the street, but hey.

Okay so you'll probably realize pretty quickly I'm not happy with any of my options. I actually am thinking of the women's house, strangely, just because it's a res coll that's open, its beautiful, and its clearly not all set against men because its faculty master is a man.

Otherwise, so far, my opinions aren't too useful because everything I like isn't actually available. Sorry about that.... I wasn't really aware I was being quite so pointless.

can anybody get to the app? it's up and i tried to log in but now it's saying it's forbidden. hmm...

the transfer link isn't up yet, is it?

yeah make sure you are in the transfer page and nto the freshman one....transfer link isn't up yet

Updated 7/10/06: The Transfer Student Housing Application is now available online. You will need your NetID and Password to access the application. Please make certain that you understand the instructions that follow before proceeding to the application.

lol i had bookmarked the page and it didn't show the update...sorry..mine is working btw

err i dont see anything either.

you have to press "refresh" and its in purple at the top of the page

I'm @ Northwestern, and a current Northwestern student who is also a counselor @ NHSI w/ me was nice enough to show me the transfer students' limited dorm choices. Sooo...let me give you the 411, based on 3 sophomore NU students' opinions:

Bobb-McCulloch - notorious for partying and being an all-around gross dorm. However, if you are super social...you'll really enjoy this one.

Foster - all men...mostly because most of its residents adhere to religious regulations and customs (i.e....not rooming near other women, etc.). It's pretty?...but no women! err....

Plex - They say the Foster Walker Complex is the most segregated dorm on campus. All races are split up into different areas, and it's difficult to break into social groups where being caucasian is the minority. BUT...it's in a great location, you have 2 cafeterias, it's all singles...and air conditioned! :)

Goodrich - some random house that just went coed this year. this house was suppsoedly run by a sorority that failed, so there are some sketchy, weird girls who refuse to leave the house... i have no idea. my tour guide and her friends were pretty vague.

Healthy Livin, Interfaith - "Just don't live there. trust us." They aren't my style, according to them...but these might work for others!

Kemper - the most requested dorm on campus. They call it Hotel Kemper. If you can handle a double, I'd sooooo goo for Kemper. It's like...apartment style dorms RIGHT ON the lake. Sooo you get direct lake views and access to the beach. You're also right next to SPAC. The oly problem is that everyone in Kemper knows each other, so it will be extremely difficult to make friends...esp cuz most r juniors and seniors.

Public Affairs -My tour guide lived there and hated it. My friend lived there and hated it. Someone feel free to defend it lol

Lindgren - Nobody has ever heard of Lindgren @ NU, but they said they've never heard anythingg BAD about it...which is good. This might be a safe choice...esp if u want a coed dorm w/ singles.

ISRC - I'v eheard mixed reviews. Some think it's great...others not so muchc. If you r majoring in international studies, I say go for it!

584 Lincoln - super far away from campus...another option that my tour guide rejected almost immediately.

2251 Sheridan/Transfer - Again, mixed reviews...but moreso on the positive. The students that live int he transfer house grow really, really close w/ each other....but this also leads to difficult yin finding friends outside of the transfer student bubble. However, it can be done...and many of my current Northwestern friends have really good friends that transferred and lived in the transfer house. The house is also very very very pretty.

Welll...I hope that helped! Feel free to object to any of my friends' opinions if you are a Northwestern student and think otherwise. good luck w/ housing! I ended up doing:
1) T house
2) Lindgren
3) Kemper
4) Goodrich
5) Foster

and the app is now available.

i chose:
1 lindgren
2 584 lincoln
3 transfer house
4 kemper
5 goodrich

so..stupid question...once you start the app can you go back and edit it or is it pretty much final?
